Well, after much deliberation and with great difficulty, I decided to part with my beloved imp recently. Must have put her up too cheap too.... only put one ad up and it sold within 24 hours! Oh well, I'm happy with the price I sold it for and the buyer is happy with the price they're getting it for, so must be right! So long Faf... it was fun whilst it lasted! Anyways, I'm considering the next option now. Although I probably won't be buying anything for a couple of weeks. At the moment, the two I'm considering are.... Early MX5 or, Mk1 MR2 What do you guys reckon? Anytihng else I should consider I need something that I can pick up relatively cheap, so I'm not expecting perfect paint etc. Looking to spend about £1000 which should get me average condition versions of each of these.... At least some practicality is a bonus and for that the mx5 probably wins because it has a bit of a boot etc. I do like that idea of a droptop too [/tart] But the MR2 I reckon I'd probably get a slightly better one for the money. It would only be a few years older, but the cabin of an mx5 looks like a much nicer place to be to be honest...something is drawing me to the mr2 though!

I like the look of the Mk1 MR2 - and there are fewer of them on the roads - and you can get a targa top, can't you?

A Mk1 MR2 is my guilty pleasure/mid life crisis. I can't help but think you have to learn to cut hair first, though

I've got a couple of mates who race a Mk1 MR2. Do it. Keep it all engine-in-the-back-mania ;D

Both are a fine choice there but I would go for an MX5 myself (but then I am biased ), The spares support for MX's is huge, and coilies for under £200, you can't go wrong Plus they don't rot as bad as the MR2's infact, if you can stretch your budget a bit, then you'd have enough to buy mine (but on the alloys, not the banded rims ;D)

Sad to see FAF go Frank.
I vote MR2. MX5s still seem plentiful but Mk1 MR2s are a rare sight these days. I thought they were pretty good on boot space with one at the back as well as up front?

mkI MX-5 is one of the most fun cars I've ever owned, and absurdly reliable with it. Can't recommend them highly enough.

Old science teacher had a few mr2's and his love for cars was our only common ground. He swore by them so they get my vote too.
Also sad to see FAF go but the memories and THAT /\ /\ pic will live forever (tacky but true).
My folks had a imp of the same colour and I've been meaning for ages to dig out the old pic's and see if it's still about, could even be FAF. By the looks of your driving style you'll be wanting a fun car so either the MR or MX shall be gooduns.

Hello Frank , sad to hear that FAF has gone to pastures new but it sounds like the new owner will look after her . I saw a red mk1 MR2 for sale locally in Clydach a couple of weeks ago , apparently it belongs to one of my neighbours mates . Do you want me to see if I can find out any details ?

I've not had an MR2 so unfortunately I can't give much of an opinion on them other than they look great and should, from what i've heard, be a blast to drive.
On the other hand, I drove Bruce's MX-5 at the gathering. So impressed was I, that yesterday I bought a '91 1.6l for myself. They really are awesome fun and feel quite basic, like a proper old school RWD. In fact I'm so impressed with the MX-5, that I really regret not trying one before! I even went for a top down, night time thrash last night, just because it's so much fun!
Consider... great driving position, excellent, well balanced handling, lively performance, top notch reliability, superb parts availability and great upgrade potential ...and it's a rag top! What's not to like?

I have an MX5 and it's growing on me. Not that fast in a straight line but it's fun. Bloody wallowy but I reckon it'll be a lot better once I've got it lowered.

Stock worn suspension is a bit bouncy, but ebay coil overs sort that out no probs (or good stock as well if you like 4x4 ride height )
