SWMBO prefers to have an automatic as a daily. Fair enough, but her current Mazda is boring (albeit utterly reliable : . Whaddaya reckon would suit her best as retro alternative? Anything up to 1600cc would be fine, no preference as to marque etc. About £1000 in the pot. Suggestions please! ;D Ta!

Owned one for a year - Loved it - Outposed porsches and pretty much anything once you open the doors. MUST be lowered or looks too dumpy. Based on the Paseo, awful gutless 1500 engine but reliable and does the job - 4 spd Autobox ok, never tried a manual. In the summer you must have air-con or you are sitting in a sauna due to the roof also being glass - Windows are tiny so it doesn't help ventilation, and the roof glass starts where the window stops. None of them use later aircon gas so getting it topped up is hard. Make sure the door hydrogas struts work - quite dangerous if they don't hold up - Very heavy doors. Have a laugh when people try to get out - Tell them to pull the lever and do the chicken song!
I found the engine mounts transfer a lot of vibration through the car on tickover, may of been just mine.
The light bulbs are of a type which needs a special cable made up, and even after that the headlights are completely useless. Single bulbous magnifying glass type with lousy beam spread, even with good bulbs. Full beam is supplied by the large square light in the unit and that's ok, but you can't drive full beam everywhere.
Get one!

Liking the ideas on here!
Pretty keen to maintain the Japanese theme, the Mazda is tip top aside from the personality bypass! The Sera is coo-ell, I remember them being launched at the Tokyo motorshow in '88 or '89. Always liked 'em, but they had slipped from the memory. Many thanks for all the info and the eBay link.
A K11 Micra? That's the bubbly one, right? I loved the slotmag-shod one at the Gathering, for some reason I have 'Saltflat Racer' in mind when I think of them; Moon Discs, slammed, flat paint etc...interesting...
Shall Google both for inspiration. Thanks!

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I shall keep a beady eye on that eBay Sera, I hadn't realised that they potentially fall into range price-wise.
