You have just picked £500 off the money tree down the end of your garden, your mission is to go and buy a track day car, you only have £500 give or take £50 , doesn't have to be MOT'd as you will trailer it to the venues, the money has to include the purchase of the car, and however you decide to modify it to suit the track.
Out of the 'retro' hot hatch brigade I'd go for, one of the following:
mk1/2 xr2
mk2 golf gti
205 gti
Metro gti (mpi) - not so retro
Mods: EBC pads (assuming discs are ok), braided hoses, cheese cut everything, strip interior out. good service.
Take the xr as an example:
Cost of car: £200'ish
EBC green stuff pads: £24.98 or red stuff £29.32
Goodridge braided hoses: £42.95
Lowering springs: £60
Tyres: £100 'scrubbed' A032r yoko's
on 750mc at the mo.
TOTAL: £427.93 (based on green
stuff)
Remainder could go on hidden costs.
What would you go for?

I'd have to go for the Pug, providing it's the 1.9 model.
I've driven several of them and never failed to have fun, I've failed to keep to the speed limit, but never failed to have fun.
The 1.9 has cooler wheels anyway ;D

i would be very tempted to look at an astra GTE with the XE engine
lower and stiffen if budget allows

Damn was gonna say Avenger ;D Not retro (please not too much abuse) but a hell of a lot of fun (my everyday car) Fiat Cinquecento Sporting. for £200 you can fit the 1.2 16v (85bhp) engine from Punto sporting. Strip it out (it weighs 720kg as standard  ), suspension and good tyres and you on your way. Lots of work, but you may be able to stay in budget buying an old toyota starlet and fitting the 4AGE (125bhp) engine from mk1 mr2. |

A Volvo 940 turbo, they cost buttons and are fast like you wouldn't believe, and you could always use the change from your £500 on good tyres and brakes when you kill them on the track eventually, and you'd be really comfy when you drive home in it!

Hehe, I actually know someone who is selling a 3 litre Senator, and ex police unmarked traffic car. It goes like hell, would be great fun on a track. The only problem is that it's got an auto box |

How about an 80s Nissan Silvia Turbo... Bodge in a bigger intercooler from a written off modern turbo diesel, wind up the boost (tighten down the head bolts a bit more ;D - actually fit a thicker head gasket :  Cut down the springs & weld another s/hand roll bar to the existing, strip out the interior leaving one of those budget Motordrive bucket seats Should be possible for £500 should think |

I'd have a standard looking early Lada Zhiguli (before the Riga)(£150) but with a Fiat twin-cam (maybe £200) grind down the springs and port the head at home, and spend the rest of the cash on decent tyres, braided brake-lines and fill the brakes with the class-1 lorry-grade brake-fluid I use (it makes a difference, and I can get it for almost naff-all due to a good friend who can get a hold of it by the jerry-canful. That lot would have the Saxo mob laughing out the other side of their pale junkie faces!
