How do everyone in retro world.
Just testing the water here for my next project.
What are the most commonly used american V8 engines? How big are they? How much do they go for? What power do they give? What kind of support is there for them? How expensive are the transmissions that go with them?
Oh hell, does anyone know of any decent websites with all this gen on them?
Cheers folks, Smiler.

ooh, nice. That's not a triumph chassis under there is it? Pardon my ignorance as I haven't researched the american V8 engines yet but what make is it? Hang on, better start a new thread, I'm kind of hi-jacking this one. Tee hee...thread swap! Yes, it's in a Triumph...my Herald in fact. I bought it complete almost 2 years ago, currently it rests in my garage awaiting some engine work...after which I'm going to sell it (back to the cheap stuff for me...).

Small block Ford ( Windsor 302 c.i. [5.0 litre], 351c.i. [5.8 litre] or Cleveland in same capacities) or Small block Chevrolet (mostly 350 c.i. [5.7 litre] but going down below 307). The Ford Cleveland is a tougher motor than the Windsor but is wider, so cannot fit all aplications. The small block Chev is the most produced engine in history with many millions built since the 1950s. Don't know what they would go for over there but here they go for as low as a couple of hundred Aussie Dollars for a smokey overhaul candidate to 5 or 6 thousand Dollars for a full race motor. For a bit of info about what sort of things these have been fitted to and some of the off the shelf conversions there are try an Australian website called Castlemaine Rod Shop. He makes all sorts of conversions, andhis personal car is a 1955 Chev with a 27 litre V12 from a P51 Mustang WW2 fighter. It is fully street legal and has 3,500hp. It is listed in the Guinness book of records as teh most powerful registered car in the world. www.rodshop.com.au/

Thanks for that, I shall take a look.
Think I'll stick to the smaller capacity engines though as oposed to a V12 Aero engine! ;D

The engine in that Triumph is a small block Ford. It's easy to tell because they have the dizzy at the front where as Chevy's are at the back. Fords are considerably lighter and smaller, Chevy's are more plentiful. Belive it or not, they've built more than 60 million of them. Crazy.
Parts for Ford and Chevy smallblocks are ludicrously cheap. The pistons for the 302 (5-litre) in my Capri cost about £7 each.
Go for it.

At that price it would be rude not to.
My next concern will be the running gear. I take it I am going to need a yank gearbox. What about the axle? Nightmares, I remember you saying you were having issues with the propshaft, what rear axle are you using? Will I need to convert a mustang axle or similar?
One final point, how thirsty is this thing going to be? I need to retain some economy as it is my daily driver. I need one sensible car. ;D

Will, just seen your reply in the practical performance magazine thread. Cheers for that, hopefully it'll fit without too much tunnel bashing. Just the axle now then, and the economy issue. (a V8? Economy? Ha!) Cheers, Smiler.

My Capri used to do 12 to the gallon. Then I fitted an Emerald ECU to control the ignition timing. It now does 18 to the gallon. Next step is EFi - home made. I'm confident I'll get mid 20s on a run after that.
Will.

Considered home grown?
Good ole Rover is a nice torquey unit with loads of life and cheap as hell.
Also light (less than a Pinto).
Worth thinking about.

That economy sounds like a bit of a killer even with an LPG conversion.
The Rover V8 was the first V8 on the list due to it's lightweight and plentiful supply but some people have been advising me away from it.
At the moment though it's looking like I'll end up with a 2.9 V6.
Though this information isn't going to be wasted, I plan to build myself a track/strip weapon at some stage and a good friend of mine has expressed an interest in joining in the venture.
Thankyou very much for your input folks, it is much appreciated. I now have a much better view of the picture with this type of conversion now and it's all been good food for thought.
Cheers, Smiler.

Yeah, Castlemaine Rod Shop has a lot of great gear. We got a kit off them once to fit a 4.1 Ford six into a Landcruiser. It makes them go like anything. Also the disc brake conversion on the Transit is from him.

alright for some the ones in my small block ford were nearly 600 quid smiler i'd stick with the 2.9 if you just want a car thats got good performance and economy(my 302 does about 10mpg) don't go for the rover they can be very unrelible there expencive to tune (approximatly three times that of a chevy)and stock 2.9 has more power and torque than a stock rover 3.5

The 2.9 is looking favourite. It's easy as pie to fit, has a fair bit of poke for an every day car and even retains a decent amount of economy if I behave myself. ;D Just need to save up and find a nice Cossie 24 valver. Though I'm still very interested in the converted carb fed 2.9 you were telling me about. I have also been talking to my mate again (the bloke you've seen me with each time nightmares, snatapod and with the van to pick up those bits) and he deffinately wants to get involved. The present plan in my head is to use a 2 door mk4 or 5 Cortina, drop in a 302 and paint it up in the Starsky & Hutch colours as seen in the back of Classic Ford Mag a while back. Should be tops! ;D Thanks again folks. Regards, Smiler.
