I'd say mk2 escort of some sort too. Anti tramp/ARB brackets rules out most early stuff, handbrake is different to corty 16e and mk1 capri/escort so that only really leaves escort 2 - capri 2 got a salisbury axle (except the 1300, which didn't get a rear ARB

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

From what I remember of the axles, looks like a RS type from a mk2 escort, its the only small ford other than the Capri that had rear ARB, and as stated they came with the atlas in most cases.

The hogshead casting date computes to Jan 17 1980. So appears to be a Timken-design English axle, and if SOC says it's Escort-y, then I'd go with that. Did Mk2 Escorts use the transverse rod for the parking brake, as this has that feature on the housing. Norm

The anti roll bar mounts point to Escort ( Mk 2 ) or Capri . I wouldn't identify by diff or brakes , both are easy to swap from year to year. Width is usually the easiest place to start.

thanks for all the replies
The axle case measures 48" from end to end, i have not bolted the circular case that hold the brake components on the other side yet so cant give an exact measurement of these bolted to case.
your right in the fact that it did have the bar connecting the two handbrake mechanism's however I am using a different set-up so discarded the bar.
i believe the four bolts that connected the brake case to the axle were imperial bolts.
The internal drum size is 9" the diameter of the backplate is 11"
ive cleaned up the brake drum and it does have markings on it which read : 78 EB 1126 AA, on the side there is OA9A3, also there is information stating 229.4 MAX DIA.
64677490 & 0976 are marked on the brake cylinder but can find any info on that
i was wondering what the two brackets were for on the main case, would this be a rear ARB? are there any pics of how it was setup as would like to get this functioning again.
thanks again

The 9" ID brake parts are Capri compatible. As Kevvie says, it's entirely possible you have a custom or mishmash of parts. The brakes you show are also used on the Capri Atlas. So you may well have a 1980 Escort Mk2 Timken axle with Capri Mk2/3 Atlas brakes. The drums appear to be the 1-3/4" wide shoe type (4-cyl), rather than the 2-1/4" wide V6 type. The upper clamps, yes, are for an ARB, which the Capri used after 1972 in place of radius rods (1969-72). Norm
