Thanks all , looks like its going the dropped with banded steels route , smooth the tailgate and lose the rear door handles , i can handle the expense of a set of wheels and the paint wont cost anything , as rmad says its a good base colour to start with , need something cheap to do in the evenings so thats the plan then

for a nice 2-3" drop at the front, get yourself some 306 struts+springs. They fit into the hubs with no bother, but you do need to widen the ARB holes by a couple of mm, and the top of the strut towers need re-drilling to suit. The 306 struts normally only fit with 3 bolts, but they're actually drilled+tapped for four bolts... so I used all four This was mine, after fitting a set of 306 struts, with 30mm lowering springs! standard 406 on the left, standard 306 on the right, 306 with 30mm spring in the middle and a 306 saloon that had chopped rear springs:

I've had mine a month now and I'm stuck for inspiration, which is fine as it's only meant to be a daily. Looking for some Coupe 16 inch starfish alloys, tints will be getting done, yellow fogs maybe... Fact is it's dull as hell, but it won't go under 40mpg even in heavy traffic or towing, it does 60mpg without trying on the motorway, has all the space in the world, is very comfy and suits me as a daily that I don't have to care about
