I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't seem to get the right search together to find it. I've been pootling around online trying to find the answer too, and it seems to be vague.
Bonnet Mascots & The Law
On a pre-1972 car any bonnet mascot may be fitted. On a car made after 1972 a European Law was introduced that states no protruberance that might cause harm to a pedestrian in a collision may be fitted to the car, in particular, bonnet mascots.
However... I'm also aware that there is apparently a set distance from the edge of the bonnet that a mascot is permitted and I've been told that spring-loaded or rounded mascots are permissable in any location.
I'm after some clarification on this one. If I were to fit a bonnet mascot (and I've found one I'd like, but it's mostly just a spike XD) I think to play it safe I'd have it removable and only attached for show use and meets.

you could still order jags and mercs with mascots on up till the 90's, merc ones were springy and the jag ones looked weedy enough at the base to snap off.

perhaps just use some magnetic strips if its just for shows etc (like the magnetic L plates) to attach it? nice and easy to attach and remove and dirt cheap to as for the legal side of things i think you've got it covered in your first post in the fact they have to be springy or retractable as not to harm the kitten carrying nuns at the bus stop when you plow into them

tbh i think the mascot is going to be the least of their worries if they are being hit by a car.
i suspect its based on that might be the straw that broke the camels back, as if your going 30, a kid car survive, but if your going 30 WITH a mascot it could kill them.
which is completely stupid lol

I had a row of inch long spiked studs running along the length of the bonnet on my bug, along the trim holes, got a couple of double takes from traffic coppers but never actually got pulled! I thought i'd get pulled straight away because they're so blantantly dangerous! this was it, can't really see the spikes but it also ran a 2 foot long stinger exhaust sticking out the back that spat flames out on the overun ;D

Remember the days when sex was safe and motorsport was dangerous. Vintage bling always attracts pussy.

Having followed your readers ride thread, I reckon you have the ingenuity to make it spring loaded or build a weak link into it so it snaps off before it impales a nun.. It would take a very picky policeman to pull you up over a bonnet mascot though

@berny: I'm going to have to buy shares in magnets at this rate, since that's a stonking idea. bmw156: Precisely my thoughts on the matter. Really, if I'm hitting you with a car, I doubt a mascot (unless it's a miniature chainsaw or something) is going to do you any more harm than I have already. cairyhunt: Carmaggedon was a great game, wasn't it? Diabolu: If/when I win it I will surely post a picture of it. Dad thinks it might be a Ford Pilot mascot, but I'm not 100% sure. ben711200: I was thinking of ways to do it, then berny suggested magnets and I think I'm sold on that idea. @mudbitz: bush cables?

These are bush cables: They are meant to guide tree branches etc up over the roof of a 4x4

Hard drive magnets. Added bonus the backing plate they are glued to can be drilled for screws, or if you are careful break them off the backing and glue the piece on.
Wouldn't fly off at 70 but given a shove would just PLUNK off.

someone at a show would nick a mascot held on with magnets unless you were with the car all the time.

Well that's where PhilA's suggestion works. You drill through the magnet so it's got anti-theft at shows, but don't bother on the road, so that it's 'pedestrian friendly'. Isn't it annoying that we have to worry about people stealing stuff off our cars, especially at shows?

You use Twitter too much username pre-dates Twatter by many, many years. haha, yup, but the chances of me bumping into someone who used IRC in the early 90's I thought would be rather low
