The time has come I think - I'm a bit bored of the car. Ideally I'd like a swap with a bit of cash my way to get me started on it. I can't afford to put any money your way. Not desperate to sell - Don't have anything else lined up and I don't need the cash, so a swap would suit me best.
On my current "want" list are mk1 golfs, mk1 or mk2 caddys, Chevettes, Lupos, Passats, Anything with a bit of character, new or old. But not a Mini. They cause me to come out in a cold sweat and throw my wallet in a lake.
I don't mind something that needs a bit of work, but I do need something that I can run about in straight away.
Model: 106 XSi 16v
Year: 1993
Mileage: 80k ish
Tax: Dec 10
MOT: Oct 10
Location: Rotherham, S65
Price: £1500 ish
I bought the car off a mate - its a 1993 1.4 106 XSi. He bought it about 2 years ago, with 72k and FSH.
The 1.4 engine, despite having FSH was a bit of a dog, with a failing headgasket. Rather than delve into it, he just put a VTR engine in, and then used the car for a couple of road rallies and a track day.
I bought the car off him about 7 months ago, and fitted a Saxo VTS engine, replaced the interior and did the bodywork etc.
Spec:
1.6 16v engine, air filter, 4-2-1 Stainless manifold, decat and full custom 2.5" stainless exhaust. It's pretty loud when you have your foot down. Brand new coilpack and ECU at a cost of over £300, so it actually idles and doesn't misfire like most of these engines. Probably around 135-140bhp.
Rebuilt rear axle, new bushes, ball joints, track rod ends (inner and outer) and front dampers. Custom coilovers.
14x7.5 and 14x 8.5" banded steels, done by JamesP, with <1500 mile toyo proxes tyres - Not over stretched, fitted within toyos width recommendations.
Interior has been swapped completely with kit from a 2003 Saxo VTR, including the dashboard and digital dials. There's a Sony CD player with aux in and some fusion speakers in the doors. The speakers aren't very good though. It's got a nice deep dish steering wheel in - It's a fake OMP one, but it's arguably nicer than actual OMP ones. Nice and solid and generally good to drive with.
I've also fitted proper remote central locking to replace the infra red curse word they come with - Now you don't have to punch the fob through the windscreen to get it to unlock, works from about 20 meters away.
I did have a pretty nice stereo fitted, with an in-car PC, 7" VGA touchscreen, 10" sub, Hifonics amp and some Focal front speakers. Those of you at RRG10 will have probably heard me blasting Warren G out of it on Saturday night. I'd rather hang on to it all, but it's available as bartering leeway, including a very neat and tidy boot install with the amps hidden under a false floor.
Bodywork wise, the car was rough when I got it. No major damage, but loads of small dents or creases. Rather than try and fill them, I just replaced both doors, the passenger wing and the bonnet, and a friend painted the car in Grey 2k. It's a custom colour, but I have another 5 litres, enough to paint the whole car twice over!
The paint job is not a professional one, but it's turned out very well. There are some imperfections but overall it's a lot better than the original paint on any 17 year old car would be. It's got a good shine to it, with no orange peel or runs.
It's got Fibreglass JDM style arches fitted to cover the wheels, and the bumper/metalwork underneath trimmed to clear the wheels.
Bad points - The front bumper is cracked at the bottom, in the middle from when the car was used on a track day and the car infront clipped a tyre which got flung into my path. It was repaired, but has since cracked again. Not all that noticeable.
The passenger window is a bit slow, and the electric window switches are mounted on a custom bracket inside the drivers door pocket. Not that pretty, but they don't stand out and it works fine.
The boot lock doesn't work with the central locking. The motor is there and works, but a small plastic hook has snapped off the lock. Fixable with some araldite and 10 minutes.
Maybe 1/30 times the starter motor doesn't engage. It's always been like this, and I've had the replacement starter motor sat in the house waiting to get fitted if it does get worse for months. I'll obviously include it with the car, or even fit it if I get round to it. It's a pretty simple job.
