It's strange that the bulkhead resembles a lace curtain but your inner wings and battery tray look very solid! My inner wings were shot, but my bulkhead is OK. These cars love to rust don't they?! Good work!

The inner wings and chassis rails are solid but where they join to the bulkhead there have been some curse word repairs in the past. Not sure how to takle this one as i don't want to go cutting anything out and have the front end fall off, as there cant be much holding it on as it is.

That's where mine went too, under the servo. The inner wing should be quite firmly attached to the chassis rail though (in theory!) so I wouldn't worry about chopping that grot out. It's a bit of a pain to weld in the footwell where the handbrake bracket is mounted, I ended up in some pretty weird positions welding that up! ;D

bought one of these today and started hacking away at the inner wing and footwell. There were at least 3 layers of patch repairs to the footwells, the inner wing was also being held on with patch plates.

some bad news this week, the engine and gearbox i had delivered a couple of weeks ago don't match, '89 420 engine and '84 gearbox. The breakers are local to me so i called them up and they said they had got rid off all the gearboxes as they were leaking all over their workshop, so Ill have to wait until they have another one in to break with the right gearbox and swap them.
The good news is that i got some sheetmetal delivered, I can highly recommend ArenaStock for the DIYer, full cutting and bending services and only £10 delivery. So hopefully by the end of today i will have fabricated and welded my drivers footwell and sill in, we shall see....

This is making me feel really, really bad about not getting on with mine! Nice work, I love the fact Mercedes still supply parts for their classics. To me, that's a huge plus for a car manufacturer. I've witnessed Ford parts people denying that they ever made a Mk3 Escort, for example. And Mazda told me my 929 did not exist at all! ;D

i think nearly all the panels are still available through mercedes or reproduction from germany, price is rediculous though so not really worth it unless your doing a concourse restoration.
The list of welding jobs is still pretty big though:

Any opinions on a steering rack conversion? Would be a hell of a lot less hassle to get the exhaust routed than if I keep the steering box. I was thinking of maybe a rack from a Vito or something suitably heavy duty but reasonably easy to come by and fix if needed. Considered trying a FWD Vauxhall or Audi rack of the type that's mounted on the bulkhead and has the rods connected to the middle part that moves when turning?

cheers guys. Got a letter from the council recently, someone has complained about noise pollution from all the grinding ive been doing so I'm taking it easy over the next few weeks just trying to do as much as i can in the garage, mainly stripping bits ready for shot blasting.

Big props on this, I love W115's but It seems despite being built of best quality steel, MB didnt take much notice of rust protection in those days...

Back on it today. front seat mounting removed to allow sill and floor cutting more of the sill removed to reveal some rot on the B pillar Then moved on to the floor panel, drilled out the spot welds to the cross member. Cross memeber doesnt look too bad but not easy to repair in situ. So I cut it out to repair in the garage
