Gonna be great with an 8. I love how people go on about old Mercs "being built to last" they've either been welded, need welding or are made of filler and underseal lol.

Good to see an early W115!
What engine is it originally?
How much more grot is there to sort out? How's the bulkhead and floors?

That must be one of the earliest W115's! Love the plans for it, I'm doing similar things to mine - lots of welding and a V8.

Not sure if mine is technically still a Merc these days with the amount of fresh metal in it! Good to see you're getting stuck in there - how much were those panels though and where did you get them from? See if you can get it finished before Benzboy! Joe Edit; just noticed the dayglow Cleveland Panels stickers!

Yours and Pogomark's thread were what made me want a W115 in the first place. Aiming to get it done for next summer and bring it to my first RR gathering. Got a good deal on the panels from Clevealnd Panels; 2x rear wings 2x rear inners 2x sils 1x front wing mount 2x complete rear lights I just asked them for a discount and they took about 20% off the original price bringing it to £280 delivered. Panels arent bad either, about half as thick as the original panels but still usable. My replacement rear slam panel was £150 from Mercedes but I'm not very impressed, its very thin metal and out of shape in some places. It had a "made in the netherlands" sticker on it so I'm assuming it was outsourced.

That's a good bucket of rust! good thing all those panels are still available, makes life a lot easier.. I wouldn't trust dutch made panels good source for classic panels is Klokkerholm, they're a danish panel making company, dunno who supplies them in the UK though

The rear end work was stagnating and getting a little boring so Ive temporarily moved on to the main event, the engine installation., Ill get back to the rear panel at some point. After some messing about i got the engine and gearbox out this afternoon. cutting off the slam panel made it a lot easier to get out but it was still a ball ache to move the engine around as my driveway has a slight slope. The engine and gearbox are up for grabs together or seperatly if anyone is interested, its got 115000 miles on it, ive only run it for about 10 mins but oil pressure was good it was very noise though. Hopefully get the fron subframe and steering gear out tomorrow so I can get one with fixing the bulkhead.

Any opinions on a steering rack conversion? Would be a hell of a lot less hassle to get the exhaust routed than if I keep the steering box. I was thinking of maybe a rack from a Vito or something suitably heavy duty but reasonably easy to come by and fix if needed.

It's a bit of a tight squeeze with the steering box, I've got about 10mm clearance, max. Not got around to sorting that yet.
How about a Volvo rack out of a 240 / 740? Dunno what sort of set-up they use but they're similar sized cars.

what type of manifold are you using with your V8, mines got the single exit "log" type, one from an R107 would be ideal but very hard to come by

what type of manifold are you using with your V8, mines got the single exit "log" type, one from an R107 would be ideal but very hard to come by I haven't quite solved that problem yet! ;D The original log manifolds from the W126 are too long and hit the bulkhead. I'm probably going the tubular manifold route, although I still don't know where the heck I'm gonna feed them through! ;D I have a pair of manifolds from a W116 450 V8 which fit really nicely - the right-hand side exits between the engine mount and steering box, and the left hand side exits near the back of the head but not as long as the W126 log, so doesn't hit the bulkhead. I may use those yet, although the ports on the head are slightly larger than the manifold bore. The 420 might have the same size ports though. W116 manifolds might be cheaper and easier to come by possibly?

Got on with removing the subframe today, without the engine in the car was too high for my jack so i used the engine crane to lift it up and place it on axle stands. Then used it again to lower the subframe back to the ground Subframe mounts were shot but the subframe is in really good condition. Everything is coming apart suprisingly easily, nothing rusted or seized. The firewall is going to need some serious work though, 40 years worth of water collecting in the air intake. Steering gear will be out tomorrow, hopefully i can get a mobile blast cleaner to come and take all the grime, paint and underseal off the bulkhead and chassis rails so i can get on repairing and reinforcing them.
