Goodyear eagle f1's, and the mr2 was on crappy Maxxis or something cheap.
I've also owned a turbo 2000 and I have to say it was a hoot, but that also understeered, ... you can dial it out with suspension upgrades and so on.
But having driven both on road and track, for 'most-fun-for-buck' I'd go with the mr2.

Thing is with a track day who cares how much power its got, you could go around in a 2CV and you would probably be having a whale of a time.
Just go out and hit the track in anything - it dosnt matter you will love it. Then worry about what you want to drive after you have done a few days.
Also depending on driver a low powered car will keep up with a pass a more powerful car. With only 130bhp I have kept up with and passed WRX's, Supras, BMW's, Porsche's etc on past track days.
Driving a low powered car to the utter limit is more enjoyable than nursing some rocket ship around a circuit, and at the end of the day its all about enjoyment.

I got given a non turbo Imprezza sport as a company car, things was slower and handled worse than my 2 litre twin cam 4x4 Sierra, i would suggest that unless you can buy a really good Imprezza they are not worth the money.
Personally if i wanted to have fun on a track, i'd be loking for something that had ore power than grip and was RWD, as your not allowed to "race" on trackdays why bother spending all that money to go super fast?
An MX5 with a beefed up engine will grip well enough to be fast but will let you have a bit of fun if you want to without having to travel at mental speeds.
I could get my 4x4 sierras to slide sideways but you had to be going really fast to do it while an XR4i with an LSD fitted would drift at 30mph, now much as we all like speed, it costs money, having fun in a 4x4 eats tyres, fuel, clutches, and rubber bushes like you wouldn't believe.
you could buy a supercharged jag for under 2 grand and strip the interior out if you don't care how much fuel your gonna use for instance, how much more "interesting" is that than a J 4x4 techno toy?

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I wouldn't want anything else ;D Bit hard to find now, mind... No1 priority for a track days car for me if handling. Not power, not traction or grip, just how responsive it is and how it feels. If it's got no vices, no nasty little quirks in it's handling, then you can push it to the limit and have fun. Cars that have plenty of power and grip but are unpredictable are not fun on the track.

Well, some excellent stuff there, and to be honest, i'd love any of them. I've heard of a stripped out Vento VR6....I know, FWD, not mega powerful...but i like the look of them, and it's fairly cheap too....just waiting on more details. J stuff scares the $hit out of me tbh, i used to be a Ford man, now a VW man, but allcomers are welcomed, i have no bias. Let's see what happens

Driving a low powered car to the utter limit is more enjoyable than nursing some rocket ship around a circuit, and at the end of the day its all about enjoyment. Very true! With that in mind a Corolla would be ideal, I drove an AE92 (you known the FWD GTi thing on a G-plate-ish) last night was a riot would make a great track car IMO revvy 4age lump and good handling. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face! It's been a long time since a FWD did that for me

The only thing I'll say about FWD cars for track days is, they are as much fun as a RWD until it's wet. On a wet track day a RWD car is lots of fun but FWD not so much IMO, especially when equipped with an LSD. That's just a personal view but maybe one worth thinking about.

a mate of mine used to have a 2000 modl M5 and run that round the ring with some success he said it was fairly haeavy but still fun.
until some stripped out pug 205 came past him on the bend and then promptly disapeard round the track!
