Ok, just been on the phone to my friend. He's taken the 340bhp S3 engine from his Rallye Golf, and is currently putting it in a 5 door Syncro......just for some stealthy fun. While we were talking, he mentioned another friend has just bought an Impreza Turbo for £1500, is stripping it out, getting more boost, and having some fun in that. It got me thinking, i'd like a road legal tool too, I currently have a Mk2 Golf VR6 which is nice, but certainly wouldn't cut the mustard with those. So, cheap, reliable, fun. I have reasonable technical know how, but i'm not clued up on in depth stuff, so simple would help. Hit me with something good............here are 2 i've thought about..... I would probably buy damaged, so estimate the car will cost less fro starters

celica is FWD and a 5 series is too heavy...M5 could work, but they're not cheap to run
try 3 series bmw's, mercedes 200 series with 5 pots, ovlov turbo barges, porsche 924, mazda mx5?

When it comes to road legal track toys, there is only really one choice.... You won't understand what the hype is about until you've driven one... I knew it would be good, but not THAT good!

MX-5, close the thread.
Or, for a little more space, an E36 325i

I'll throw in another vote for the MX-5. Also... You won't understand what the hype is about until you've driven one... I knew it would be good, but not THAT good! Exactly how I felt. ;D

Or, for a little more space, an E36 325i I can't stand BMWs on the whole but an E36 325 or 328 would be a very good call. Also worth considering the usual older hothatches. Mk2 Golf, 205, 306... That said, I went to the Ring a couple of weeks ago and had fun with a Mk1 Mondeo estate diesel.

metro/R100 with a 1.8vvc in it would get my vote. MX5's are great fun, but would need a turbo or supercharger conversion to be a real trackday toy (which can be done quite cheaply )

GT4's aren't 5th gen ones seem to go for cheep too, definitely worth a look anyway. I'll chuck in another vote for a VVC powered metro, they're great fun little cars, and you can pick up a tidy ready converted one with a few other trick bits for less than £1500.

Adam's hit the nail on the head really but for out of the box VFM BHP you've overlooked the obvious. I've raved about them before as I had one a while ago but seriously, the Impreza is in a world of it's own. Cheap to buy now compared to anything else in it's class. I hated them with a passion till I went it one. Just have a go in one and you'll know what I mean.

If you want a roof I'd second the vote for the Impreza. Another car a lot of people don't 'get' until they drive one. Or an Mi16/GTi-6 205. There's a reason there'll be a fleet of 7s, 205s and Imprezas at any track day!

Mazda MX-5 and a turbocharger.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

E34 535i - comfy, nice to drive, great predicable handling, cheap to service, OE LSD is great with a thicker oil in it, mechanically mega hard (transmission and engine builtproof) and stupidly cheap! With a decent set of suspension they make a great allrounder, road, track or drift. Thirsty and quite heavy but I could live with that

An MX-5 won't be quick enough to keep up with a stripped Impreza if its a standard engine. I'd find a cheap Subaru Forester and copy what he's doing Won't be any quicker but will be much more fun overtaking stuff seen as it looks like a jeep. Matt

Either a mk1 or mk2 mr2 ftw.
My mate had both a mk2 (rev3 I think) and Impreza, tested them both at Castle Combe (me driving one, him driving other than swap over for next session), the mk2 (standard n/a, but lowered stiff and decent pads), won hands down, could carry so much more speed through the corners, the impreza just understeered massively.
Mr2's adirt cheap aswell, you could even pick up a turbo and stuff him in the straights too.
The mk1 is even lighter and more go-karty and with a engine upgrade, bonkersly quick.

I'd put money on the Impreza wearing not particularly good tyres. They are very sensitive to tyres and will understeer and lift off oversteer if you neglect them.
