Spitfire and a Hurricane did a low fly over a few times. sent shivers down my spine. pilot is the son of a guy at work so they did a little detour on the way to a venue couple of years ago it was Eurofighters ;D sadly i didn't get any pictures, but i have some from Goodwood a few years ago video of air display at Goodwoodand got to stand behind then as they took off at last years revival

Let's face it. If the sound of a Merlin at full chat doesn't stir your soul....you don't have one.

They were doing three separate air shows yesterday and are back at Lowestoft today, looking forward to it as the Lanc, Spit, Hurricane and the Dakota should be about all together.

In the village I used to live in. The planes would often fly low overhead. Ussually modern fast jets. Once one did a low pass between my large house and the neighbours. Often see WW2 type planes. They fly along the main road, just over tree height. Ussually one with the American star. But also Brittish planes. Think it was a hurricane. Think there was Mitsibishi zero too. That was in a small village about 20 miles from the nearest open airfeild, thats in Dundee, on the east coast of scotland

I live right up the road from EASTLEIGH airport (some council type dick renamed it southampton airport ) where the spitty first took off.. the building where michell designed it is just up the road about a mile... and on last sunday we had a lancaster go over our house realy low on the way to a flypast... and later that day a spitfire too.... its great.. Used to be able to get realy close to the planes if they were in for a flypast but since the whole 9/11 thing they put those big slabbed fences up thank god for duxford

I use retro aircraft in one of my ICT lessons. Pupils have to find out what happened to Joe Mcluskie on Oct 16th 1939. The story only appears on a couple of web sites so they have to refine their searches. I use it as an excuse to show lots of Spitfire clips! The answer is that he was (apparently) the first British civilian to be killed in WW2. The story is here: www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/71/a3084671.shtml

If it's not chucking it down on Sunday, I'll be at Headcorn near Ashford in Kent at a vintage aircraft and vehicle weekend.
Rather annoyingly I have to be in Germany when Duxford's show is on......

Quite simply the most truthful statement ive ever read.
Ive seen grown men (including me) go damp eyed at the sound of a merlin.

Couple of months ago at work (on an airfield no doubt) there was an almighty roaring that just kept getting louder and louder, so I had to pop my head out the door to see what was going on. One of the other companies had thier mkIX tied down to the ground being run up. We were about 100yds away and it was deafening and the ground was vibrating ;D Once they'd finished I had to ask if it had any more in it, and was told it was boosting on 9, and the pilot sometimes saw 11 on take-off. Lovely sounding aircraft

These were taken at an old air museum somewhere near Essex. It's a pretty amateur but passionate affair, all broken aircraft, a nose from a Vulcan is the star attraction. I like this kind of thing. People caring about shells of things that don't work any more. It's almost a morbid fascination, it's what separates man from the monkeys, that's my theory anyway. Don't know what this is, but it felt ghostly and interesting. Inside the nose cone of a Vulcan. A dummy showing what life was like in a WW2 airfield bunker Another random dummy shot of a mock up of life around around old aircraft.

this place is worth a visitnot only for the aircraft but there are a lot of letters and stories of the pilots that flew these planes to protect Britian most pilots were only 18/19 years old, the stories of these pilots and knowing how young they were when they sent their last letters to loved ones makes for quite an emotional visit.
