I've decided to tentatively advertise my spitfire to see if it wets anybody’s whistles. I don't really have much time to work on it, what with maintenance of our 2 dailys and ongoing work to my mini clubman.....and a 5 month old child as well. So I’d prefer if it could go and get put on the road.
Ideally I'd like to get a running 4 seater classic to take the family out and also sell up one of the modern daily cars too.
Anyway, this is a conifer green Triumph Spitfire 4/mk2 with the 1147cc 4 cylinder mated to a 4sp manual, speedo registers 88k miles (no history). The mk2 is the most prettyist of the spitfires and also the one that was produced least in numbers.

This spitfire came out of a garage in Kenilworth after being locked up since 1978. I’ve owned it since 2008 and have started to get it mechanically sound. All the underside was coated in thick axle grease when it went into storage which has helped to preserve the underside.
The plan was to build up a some fuel injection throttle bodied (have done that) and fuel inject it also with a ford type 9 5sp box (got that too). These engines produced 67bhp standard but on fuel injection that would be nearer to 80bhp if using an ecu with the siamesed head programming. With an 8 port head the 1147cc lump was producing 100bhp at lemans. Would be epic fuel economy too.
The chassis is solid, hasn’t been welded and doesn’t need any welding. In places it had the original factory green paint on. The front and rear of the chassis has been repainted. The middle section I was going to do when I dropped the prop out.
The bodywork, and particularly the sills are the weak areas of the car. The passenger sill has gone so needs completely redoing (have panels) and the drivers side has had a sill welded over the original, which is holding fine but will need to be done. The bulkhead is good as well as the boot floor and floor pans. It will need a drivers rear wing too which I would have done when the drivers sill was done. For an MoT, IMO it just needs the passenger inner/outer sill and some patching to the passenger a pillar.
The engine is the, I think, original 1147cc 4cyl lump, running twin 1 ¼” su’s. It had been fitted with the curse word but period chrome pancake filters so may well have been warmed up? Its running a tubular exhaust manifold and a period chrome aftermarket back box (cherry bomb?). its got an brand new full width rad, and new kevlar hoses, new ignition. The engine fires up fine and runs great with fresh oil, no smoke on warm up, revving or over run. The carbs will need to be tickled to get the idle right but runs fine enough to be driven on the drive.
Since buying it, i’ve done the following work:-
-Stripped and rebuilt the front suspension – everything repainted, new poly bushes, TRE’s, balljoints, caterham spec trunnionless Canley classics uprights (cost £200), new front wheel bearings, new brake discs, new p14 brake callipers, new flexi hoses, decent 2nd hand avo coilovers.
-Stripped and rebuilt the rear suspension, new polybushes, new brake cylinders, new brake shoes, everything repainted, one new drive shaft joint, new rear shocks, new diff pinion seal and fresh diff oil
-New brake master cylinder
-New clutch master and slave cylinders and pipe
-Converted to negative earth
-The lucas starter motor died so I have done the izusu trooper starter motor mod (same as the “racemettle” hi torque starters you can buy). Brand new starter, more powerful than the actual engine!! £150 to buy....
-Stripped repainted the front chassis section (engine bay area)
-Stripped repainted the rear chassis section
-New radiator, new Kevlar coolant hose kit, new heater valve, new points, cap plugs, ht leads, thermostat, new air filters, oil+filter
-5x13 lattice dished alloys with new front tyres and nearly new 185/70 rear tyres. new 135/80 pirelli spare on original steel wheel. Also another original steel spare.
-Rare omnibob fibreglass/plexi hardtop, original tent frame soft top frame (£100 2nd hand), decent softop. Also a roll hoop also available
-Set of tatty original seats, pair of later decent condition mk4 black seats.
-New fuel tank sender unit
-Pile of spares waiting to go on the car including one new front wing and a set of inner/outer sill panels
-New fibreglass front valance (needs to be fitted)
-New fibreglass boot lid (have a steel skin and frame as well)
Taking into account the guide price for a rough mk2 is £900, the work done and the parts fitted, i’d be looking for around £1700-1750 (mint would be £3500-4000)
