Try to stick with me on this lengthy post but have a quandary Good friend of mine and work college has offered me his MGB GT which is the Jubilee model and looks exactly like one of these (reason he needs to sell is space and home improvements): He's had this car for a few years and has been owned by different members of his family (cousins) since new, it has been restored a few years ago (and done well!). I myself know the car and have helped towards the running of it / carried out some repairs; so I do know it very well! Since restoration it has never been used in bad weather/no winter and is in totally standard condition ... ...and here is the problem: I ironically I had been considering yet another MGB GT (really wanted Yellow) to 'interfere' with and low and behold this appears. But... If I have it I will use it in all weather/all year round (as per all my vehicles) plus I will want to 'mess' with it. e.g I have a view to fitting a set of these onto it or Revolution 4 or 5 spokes which are done in MGB size (4 x 114.3mm), along with some nice Yokohamas. Also a set of these below the bumper Along with a ST spoiler. Oh and a bit of lowering ...And I think some J spec Mirrors mounted on the wing (fender ) would look stylish . And due to all this (regular use and modifications) I know I will probably face 'being strung up by the privates from nearest lampost' or 'Colt 45ACP through the back of the head one dark evening' ;D from previous owner. I won't 'knock it about' and will care for it but it will be used (again as per all my etc etc...) So what would other members do? Should I NOT go 'messing' with a 'as original', restored and (due to being a 'Jubilee model) slightly rarer model. Or go for it? P.S. Naturally I've dared NOT to go on any MGB Forums with said ideas (fantasies) with what I will do to it and with it! ;D Hence my question here on this superb 'broad minded' forum.

The way i see it is, If its your car you can do what you want too it, and these, Plus even though its a Jubilee model there are loads of them standard.
At the end of the day its up to you, I have had loads of flat capped type's have a go at me for the Midget and esp the MGB GT but hey I pay the road tax and Insurance, plus the running costs. Also these cars respond well to modding and at least you will know this Jubilee model will stick out.
Also a car was built to be Driven, Get it done you know it makes sense.
p.s. However I take all this back if the car was the Blue Model (forget what the name of it was, 50th or something) as these are very very very rare and should not be messed with but the Jubilee model has a lot more on the road number (5 of which are in my local club).

As BGT says, it'd be your car to do what you want with. And if the previous owner is that bothered about its originality and what happens to it, he should keep hold of it.
I saw one of those Jubilee B's in the scrappy last year - rotten as a pear but it was quite sad. Buy it and mod the fugger! ;D

From what you've said you're nto exactly planning any car wrecking non-reversible type stuff. Its a rubber bumper so it's to high anyway ;-) Change of wheels, mirrors, spots, all stuff that might have been put on it when it was new.
Keep the Jubilee paint and in my eyes it's more appealing as it'd stick out in a sea of B's.
What will kill it is using it daily for years on end without keeping on top of any wear or damage - best get under there and make sure there's no way the salty stuff will get to the metallic stuff.

1. It's all reversible 2. Your choice of mods are not extreme, ARE in keeping with the vehicle & have a period 'feel' Get on with it

From the sound of it you arent doing anything that couldnt be reversed at any point, but even if it was something more drastic, like fitting sebring arches and 10 inch wide wheels, you shouldnt feel bad, because it'd be your car, to do with as you please. IMHO i don't think there are enough "differently" (i.e. thinking outside the "flat cap" style box) modded MG's out there, and its a situation that needs to be reversed! ;D
EDIT: I type far too slowly...

Did you think posting here would get anyone to discourage you?!
Everything you describe is undoable, so what's the problem? Anyway, does the world need another MGB preserved and largely unused?

I started off reading this thread thinking keep it standard but by the end I am thoroughly convinced the mods you intend to make would be tastful and in keeping.
Defo a big thumbs up.

I say Sebring body kit and Wiiiide deep dish J-spec 4x114.3 wheels ... Dammit SOMEONE needs to make a radical MGB Or .. just do what you want with it, if the original owner loved it so much then they wouldn't sell it, don't allow them to own it by proxy through you.

Thank you ALL for your good points. I would keep it standard colour as paint is good finish. Also me prefere Rubber bumper version ...ideal for push starting in cold weather Yes that is just it, I guarantee the precise second that there is snow on the ground and I turn up at work in it, he will be jumping up and down and 'dummy spitting' ;D. Perhaps I should point out to keep it amicable that if I have it he will have to accept what I alter/do with it or no sale. Ah, now I thought there was only ONE done like this, blue with silver thick strip - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I think it's a shame the MGBGT (and MGB roadster) sometimes gets the 'concours bonker'/ 'flatcap' image. To me the MGB GT is a lovely Fixed Head koup shape and I like it in the same way as a Capri, Manta or 70's Celica. I know they are not fast in standard form but alot of fun, easy to work on/repair (of which I'm used to breakdowns/dodgy electrics aplenty with 'em) and for me the driving position is just right.

I agree with the general consensus here; It would be your car, to do with as you like. That said, if you have to work and/or socialize with the guy, it could cause problems. In which case, I'd give it a miss unless it really is too cheap to pass up on.
I must admit to being turned off to these because of the flat cap/concourse purist brigade. A shame really, they're not bad looking cars.

Oooh I forgot, as a side note my friend whos offered the 'B' up for sale already complains to me about my vehicles e.g. " Oh No, you should not use that XYZ in the winter" & " I say when are you going to sort the rust out on your front wings/doors etc. on your ABC car" I'm sure this chap goes out round the car park and scutinises my cars !

Mod it. It's just a car. I've encountered these types when I owned a Rover P6, jolly funny they are, all fussing over the 'correct' factory rubber mats at shows through a haze of pipe smoke, the men were the same......My mate blew their minds when we turned up at an owners meet in his slammed, alloyed, twin exhausted, breathed on, subbed up, tinted window motor!

;D ;D ;D It's okay, he's helped me out many a time in the past , I suppose it's just that my attitude to vehicle ownership is a little different to his. I believe in looking after a car as best you can (and afford), whereas he believes you should go the whole hog and strive for concours !

Yep As we've all said before you tend to get the 'blinkered' situation appear (of which there was a post about a few weeks back). As another friend said who runs our local car club "it doesn't matter what 'style/state' it is in - if it's on the road it's being SAVED".

definitely go for it! Its nice to buy cars you've worked on and 'know', plus the mods arent that extreme. I think you should lose the bumpers, run it bumperless, and do a little metalwork to make it look like bumpers were never intended! all i will say is keep a close eye on it in winter and wash it regularly. I think i am going to spend this summer touching up the benz as she seems to have taken a battering this winter
