had a play with the sanding block today (p80). anyway, after a quick rub on the filler it was fine but when i put it on the paint the edges of the paper got kinda gummed up, and when i pick it off it takes some of the grit off the paper! is this cause I'm useing to fine a grit or cause it nasty quality paint? ta.

What paper is it ?
80 Grit is only really good for shaping Filler, too coarse for anything else really

I feel you pain, ive been doing this non stop for the last 4weeks. ~3 hours a nite every nite (well nearly I'm not that sad! ) and I'm still only half way through! I have had simlar problems. I found some paper that was suppose to be 'anti clog' (3M stuff, green, 80 grit) supprisingly it does work pretty well. I tryed some 60grit emery from work and it clogs relly easy in comparison. As allways the the more you change the paper the less effort you require. Try a DA sander for the paint work, cant sand filler with them but they are a arm saver on straight metal.

DA is dual action.
P80 is a bit rough for paint if you do use it don't press down so hard but you are probably better swapping to a lighter grade

go for 3M or Bodyline, both of which can be found at your local Unipart, where you'll find great service, cheap products and a friendly staff ;D

btw how long should it take to sand down a capri?

yes, sounds like you're right on the sanders.
I use P80 on filler only for taking the rough ridges etc oout and occasionally on rusted metal. I use P120 on paint. Works a lot better, doesn't gouge, removes paint much better.
How long to sand down a capri? well, I've been doing my Ventora which is only slightly larger andf thats taken about 4 months so far LOL.
I sanded a victor Estate mostly by hand (used DA over the roof and bonnet) and that was done in half a day but the prep was all done before I started.

Make sure you clear the paper by blowing the filler sandings off it every couple of rubs and it will stop it clogging. Make sure the filler has completely cured, if it's only 99% of the way there it will gum the paper up and the dust won't blow out.

How long it takes to sand a car is almost impossible to say, as it varies according to how many grains of sand you are using.
I actually once sanded a mini using only 1 grain (well actually 2, after I lost the first one) and it took over 4 years. However I later developed a technique which allowed me to hold several grains all at once, thus shortening sanding times dramatically. Of course, I am not going to reveal this secret on a public car forum!

Has anyone tried the flexible sanders from PNR? Custom Car used one in a feature on bodywork and it looks good. I haven't much bodywork to do on the Volvo, but I'm tempted by them. www.flexiblesanders.co.uk

I have a set. I got the pro-kit. I would never have got the flanks on my Venotra half as nice without them I reckon. But then again I am a bit of a ham fisted amateur.

Mind the PUN but i know nothing is better than doing it by hand but I invested in a DA and a angle sander and would never go back. but there is always those places where the machine cant get too
