I know a chap called Penski on another forum and he has sent me over here to speak to you guys about my project.
I'm trying to ghetto mod a volvo 480 turbo auto to do 0-60 in under 7 seconds for a total budget of 500 quid
Heres the two logs so far from another forum!
STAGE1
So, the quest for sub seven seconds for less than 500quid has started!
Step one was to get a boost guage to see more accuratly what it was actually making at full boost, i did not really trust the original gauge.
Heres the original :
Now, the interior of the volvo is quite dark. It would be difficult to see unlit new gauges, i invested in a backlit version. (its not the most fitting gauge style wise, but beggers cant be choosers!)
So, there is it. So far it seems to be suggesting I'm not boosting much more than 8psi, whereas the original guage is almost hitting the end of the yellow (suggesting 10-12)
This is a good thing and means i can probably use an MBC to up the boost a tad to see if i can eek more speed out of this bargain bin motor!
With boost at this level, and after learning how to launch with the autobox, the best time i can get to 60 (using the g meter) is 7.56. I don't think there is much more available as it stands now.
Next on the cars is an MBC to see if the standard actuator can stand more boost. If it cant, then I'm on the hunt for a cheap one. Might be tight fitting an MBC and actuator into my tiny remaining budget!
Costs so far:
Volvo 480 turbo - 411.00
Boost gauge (inc delivery) - 24.94
Total Cost - 431.94
Boost at 8 (ish) psi
Best 0-60 - 7.56 seconds
STAGE2
Ok, so today i took the plunge.
The volvo currently has a bleed-valve fitted I Have upped the boost to just under and indicated 10psi. As i thought, the actuator struggles to maintain this, and drops to approx 6psi. This was why i went for a bleed valve atm, just to see how the actuator coped.
I tried a couple of launches, but its very wet out. Anything over 1.5k and it spins up till about 4! The initial 10psi boost only really kicks in when you first nail the throttle, so to get 10psi again (albeit breifly) you can lift and re-nail the throttle during gearchange.
Its pretty lairy on the launch (just managed 7.89 tonight), and i think the cheapy tyres are letting me down (local garage doing a bogof on tyres!) So once these are changed and its dry. Combine that a re-built actuator (should be fun) with a stronger spring, it should maintain boost above 6psi. Oh, and with half a tank of petrol!
Bleed-valve cost will be removed when i have an MBC in.
Tyre costs are going down as non-project.
I also used a tank of injector cleaner - Not sure if i including this in the project cost...
Costs so far:
Volvo 480 turbo - 411.00
Boost gauge (inc delivery) - 24.94
Bleed Valve - 16.99 (temporary)
Total Cost - 448.93
Boost at 10-6 (ish) psi
Wet 0-60 - 7.89 seconds
