as per title really i wired them up to the high beams, and blew the fuse pretty much straight away, so ill just the live as the switch for a relay, off to some thicker seperatly fused cable instead

Bog standard 4 pin 25A 12v relay, get a fused one as its one less thing to worry about. Take a feed from your main beam and wire that to one side of the coil on the relay then run the otherside to your spotlight switch and then from the other side of the switch to earth. The take the nice thick wire from the battery to one of the switched contacts on the relay and then the otherside goes to your spots. Simple

They aren't expensive, 3 or 4 quid for a fused one I would think (long time since I bought one) The five pin ones work just fine too (they just have a normally closed contact as well which will be left unused in your case)
