My wife and I love this little car (we call him Clive) but we've just bought BMW and can't afford to keep both! We've had it for about eighteen months - which is something of a record for me, and testament to how much fun it is - and have only put about 6000 miles on it since we bought it in January '09.
In my tenure it's had the following:
* New roof (a proper £400 mohair one with a heated glass window, none of the usual vinyl & plastic rubbish [it's still under guarantee])
* New MOT last week
* New tax (till December)
* Momo steering wheel
* K&N induction kit with cold air feed
* New brake pads
* New cambelt (including all camshaft/crankshaft seals, tensioners etc)
* New water pump & coolant
* Full service (including gearbox oil & diff oil)
* CD player & uprated speakers
It's a 1997 model - the last year they made the classic pop-up light mkI before they replaced it with the (IMO) uglier mkII, so it's pretty much the newest mkI you can buy, in a way! It's a proper UK model too, not a Japanese Eunos import. And it's the most reliable car in the world - that's a solid gold fact; always starts first time, idles evenly, never overheats, pulls strongly through all the gears (oh, and the gearbox is amazing - if you've never driven an MX-5, it's worth doing it for the gearshift alone).
All of this could be yours for the magnificently reasonable price of £1595 ono.

Now, like all cars of this age, it's not perfect. There are three things that I'd draw the buyer's attention to: brakes, seat, sill. Let me explain...
The driver's side rear brake caliper makes a slight fssh-fssh-fssh noise sometimes - I took it the garage (trusted, talented mechanics that I know well!) just after I bought it to ask about it - they said that basically that's what MX-5s do sometimes, and that I could replace the caliper but all I'd be doing was spending money to make it a bit quieter - as it is now, it's not dangerous or inefficient, so it's all good. Just thought it was worth mentioning.
The driver's seat has a little hole in the bolster. It's a small car and that's the first point of contact when you get in and out, so not surprising really! Here's a picture:

Finally, the driver's side sill is a little rusty at the rear, presumably because the drainage hole's been blocked at some point in the past. It was like this when we bought it, and we didn't get it repaired because it's nowhere near anything structural. It shouldn't be too hard for a decent bodyshop to repair, if it bothers you.

All in all, it's a brilliant, honest little car with loads of history. Incredibly reliable, very economical and cheap to run and, of course, loads of fun to drive!
