I've removed the original post offering the Scimitar SS1 as I've taken it apart too much, and I've had a think about what I want to do with it and my other cars. So I'm going to do it up.
This means I need something small to run about in (my C6 is too big for town use) and will offer my Golf Cabriolet. It's a 1991 J-reg Clipper in Paprika Red, it's done 115,000 miles and is MOTd and taxed to September.
I'm looking for a fun, sensible small car of similar value that my girlfriend will drive, that won't drive me round the bend with repair work, and isn't so shabby or dull that I can't use it for seeing clients.
Current thoughts are Corrado, BMW E30 Touring, BMW Compact, Audi A4 Avant (for the numberplate amusement), VW Golf III Estate. Japanese stuff would probably be the most sane, but other than Seras i really don't like it. Anything with a sunroof is good.
Really am open to suggestions of anything, I can only say no. I'd also sell it or do a deal with cash my way, but if I have to spend anything then I'll spend it on fixing the bits I feel need attention rather than changing cars.
The bodywork is fantastic. No rust on inner wings, external panels, scuttle, anywhere. Under the arches is really tidy at the back.
As a 1991 Clipper it has electric windows and a power roof. These work (and are downright odd on a Mk 1 Golf!, they disturb me slightly).
It has Fondmetal alloys with 4 very recent Pirelli P6s (put on new October 2009).
Just after getting it, the gearbox lost fifth; I bought a rebuilt one secondhand from the Mk 1 Golf owner's club but didn't get around to fitting it until a couple of months ago. So far I have done these things to the car recently:
Water pump, water flange and sensors - October 2009 (coolant change, naturally)
Boot lock seal, rear suspension spring cup replaced with new mounts - October 2009 and again when the suspension was done a couple of months ago.
Panasonic tape player fitted (speakers are still shot though).
I bought a set of suspension through the club that was being replaced with coilovers and had done 500 miles; this was fitted for me when the gearbox was done. Overall I spent £817 on having the gearbox fitted, which included a few other jobs:
Clutch replacement
Gear linkage bushes
New clutch and throttle cable, new throttle cable bush in pedal
Valve stem seals
Dragging rear brake sorted with new rear wheel bearings
Suspension fitted with new mounts front and rear
Oil and filter change
It's about to get a new timing belt and tensioner, as the tensioner is whirring.
At the moment it needs:
New roof cover - these are available for about £250, or fitted for around £350. The roof mechanism works perfectly, it's just a ratty roof. Doesn't seem to leak much but I keep it garaged; I think I got more leaks from the boot lock seal before I replaced it.
Exhaust is blowing at the front joint, it's a bit messy. Might need resealing.
There's a rattle from the front suspension which I'm told is probably a tie rod, but they couldn't free it off. I've since been informed there's an adjustment nut which might cure it.
It doesn't idle well; there's an airleak on the carb. Goes well once warm though.

Off to repair the gearbox (note bike to get home and box of suspension!).

And out and about in summer after being fixed.
My plate obviously doesn't go with the car, mostly because I can't imagine anyone wanting it, though I would be amused if I'm offered an Audi A4. Avant, please, no need for saloons![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
