I had a spare pair of hands on Saturday so thought what the hell. Let's try and get the fuel tank fitted. Well, that's a ball ache of a job as well. But it's in and connected up thanks to my helper/ the boss I guess the next job is to start fault finding around the electrical issues. I have the electrical light on the dash, the coolant light flashes and goes out, but no oil light, and the re counter is bouncing as the main relay is buzzing? There's power to the fuel pump relay, and there's power when the keys turned, but nothing from the relay to the pump. I'll test both tomorrow night and see what's what. Oh, and I fitted a new throttle cable! And I have a load more pictures too, but the latest shitey iOS update has had a negative effect on my iPad. I'm being polite. Apple tossers.

Thanks Paul and red rocket, well, would you believe it.... It only runs! Well, for about five seconds that is. And then it cuts out. Been playing with it all afternoon but no joy getting it to run for more tha 3 or so seconds, the it just cuts out. So if I get the chance, tomorrow will be more 'fault finding'. Felt good for a while there though

Just had a read through this, great project hope you get it running properly soon, fitting a strange engine into something always has a few headaches to get through.... keep up the good work Thanks pal, glad others are enjoying my trials and tribulations! So, photobucket is still playing up, but check out the new accelerator cable!! Which came unattached after some vigorous pumping when I was trying to get it started the other day so I need to sort that out! So last night I felt like doing the clocks so I can get them connected up and fitted. So, 2 packs of LEDs, green and blue. I'd felt that blue would be better with the grey of the seats so that is where I started, And yep, photobucket isn't playing. Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh I hate Apple and their updates. Every friggin time......... I'll complete the update when I can actually get my photos! Needless to say it wasn't straightforward, and I had to muck about a bit, but pretty much complete now and looking good

So, as a reminder this is what the clocks look like (actually it has the blue LEDs fitted, I forgot to turn off the flash ) And without the flash! You can see the obvious issue, yep, the. Lock doesn't light up. So, obviously taking the slightly dubious route, I decided that the clock may actually not be the best thing to go there, and as I can't get the oil light to work and I have a spare oil pressure gauge........ Of course, the light in there is green..... So green LEDs it is then And then I connected the wires all together ready to fit it all in. Then, I wired up my new converted ashtray. Not much use nowadays, especially as I've given up! (Most of the time!) so with much mucking about, chopping etc, Pretty happy with progress at the moment. More to follow

Dash back in, bloody tight with all of those extra wires, but all screwed in and ready for the next step. Had a chat with a mate who has a turbocharged subaru van, and he thinks the starting issue may be down to the original fuel pump, so ordered a new one on line, so hopefully I'll get a chance to get it fitted and see if it works before my holiday next week!

So, quick update, no new pictures yet, but I'll get some next time I'm out. Anyway, I've fitted a new pump, tried to start it again, no joy so promptly went on holiday. While I was away I read up on some possible issues and everything pointed towards a leak some where in the inlet pipe work. So when I got back I thought that would be my first port of call. Well, surprise surprise, there it was, the biggest breather pipe underneath the inlet pipe was unconnected!! So I connected it. And what do you know. It started, and straight into a steady idle. Let it run for a minute, switched it off and headed in to boast to SWMBO about my good fortune. Grab the video says I and come and see my brilliance!! Guess what? Yep, won't start now anyway, I have plenty to do, and I need to sort a grommet for the top of the tank, as I've been running it, at least trying to, from a fuel can! But for now, I've been sanding! Boring update, but video and pixies to follow. Obviously I meant piccies. But it's actually an amusing auto correct so it can stay!! Pete

Work is ongoing, I needed to rebuild the structure to carry the bed (probably going to be marine ply for now, but that may change) so I had ordered some 2x1 for the job, so choppy choppy weldy weldy and its in. My welding needs work, and I managed to twist one of the bars out so I need to grind those welds off and redo it. Practice makes perfect they say. Plenty of practice needed then. And then it was more sanding...... Other side to follow when photobucket catches up.

just heading out to the garage, but before I do, I made some door cards a while ago and thought I'd have a look and see how they line up. Turns out that they aren't too bad! Just need to figure out what to do with them now, although it's not exactly a priority! Today's jobs, sanding, fitting up the fuel hoses and maybe even get it running for more than one minute!!

Oh FFS you've got to love an apple product! I'll jump on the laptop later and do a proper update, cos clearly that ain't a doorcard is it?

Ah,good spot Joe, indeed it is. But this is the one I was actually trying to show you all! Pretty happy with them (I have the same for the drivers door) There's also panels for the back as well, courtesy of AndyE from the Brickyard (and on here as well I think!) Fitted to the side door just need to decide on a suitable covering now! In other news, more filling and sanding Cannot for the life of me find the lenses for the number plate lights so took a punt on some Golf lights which arrived this morning. Swapped out the light holders (didn't even realise they were included! Bonus!) And then thought, wonder what they look like with and without the normal mounts? Leaning towards the standard look, although I may spray the lenses black and see if they look better. Thoughts? And finally, I connected up all of the fuel hoses, sealed up the tank and put some fresh fuel in the tank. Guess what? It only Freakin runs Ran it up to warm, fan kicked in, but, no hot water to the radiator (fans run off of the ECU now) or heater matrix so switched it off and will try and bleed the system through again tomorrow. Happy though, just need to make sure it's not going to cook itself. More tomorrow hopefully. Pete

Well, I haven't forgotten this, just been a bit mad lately I needed to shift a ton logs which were blocking the van in first, and build a log store.... That done I started her up and rolled her out into the daylight. The garage has a decent slope at the front so I planned to get the coolant down to the rad. Seemed to work, so select reverse..... Oh FFS, really should have checked that first. So borrowed a couple of neighbours to push it back in and then climbed underneath to find out what's what. I disconnected the gear linkage and then asked the boss to stir the stick while I looked at it from underneath. Anyway, reverse ends up under the dash.... And fourth would be in the dash. Clearly that ain't right. I have no idea why, but guess I'm going to have to keep mucking about until it works. I have managed to select reverse, now I just need to figure out how to do it from the drivers seat! Spent the rest of the day shifting stuff around to get my wifes anniversary present in so she can strip it down before getting it blasted and finding out how bad it is!! Then today I decided that I'd stared at the wiring for long enough so I changed the layout slightly and repositioned the relay box. Much happier now. Next up, some ply for the bed. And paint!

I can see how that gear change could cause problems!! Indeed! Well, most of Christmas was spent stripping the mini down to a bare shell, I'll grab some mates and chuck it on the trailer at the weekend and get it to the body shop for blasting next week. I haven't been completely ignoring the van though, so with a couple of hours spare last night I stripped out the gear stick and stripped the whole thing down on the bench. putting it back together I gave it a good greasing and left out the quick shift plate. Looking at it on the bench though, it really was an odd shape, so I added some heat and straightened it out a bit. Back together and in, it was looking good, so I gave it a shot and it only works ? Mojo somewhat restored I shall get back to the list of things to do over the next few days. In short I need to do a couple of small welding jobs, filler, sand, paint and then put it all back together. Shouldn't take long................. Pete

So no more scraped knuckles on the dash when you change gear? result! Indeed, I still need to fit the stereo and may have to space it out a little for the amp leads at the back, but hoping there will still be enough space. Hopefully get some time on it over the weekend.
