Top Tip. Always marry a woman who earns at least twice as much as you, who also shares your dislike of children. ;D SWMBO has no interest whatsoever in cars but would never stop me buying whatever I wanted, as long as it's with my money. Likewise I'm quite happy for her to drive round in the modern of her choice, because she pays for it. I'm spoiled. Sounds exactly like my relationship with my girlfriend lol ;D

the missus ain't into older/retro cars but she doesn't stop me with the escort - it's known as the 'girlfriend' or 'other wife' within her family/friends ;D she's got a zafira i bought her that she wanted. i got the mk1 & the seat toledo [which was hers before the zafira] escort's been off the road since october though & i think the last time she got in the escort was xmas 2008 when she wanted a lift to work & i said escort or walk...... said she definitely won't get in it now with the mad pinto in there though but i'd like to change her mind in all honesty

My wife likes retros, just not the ones I own. She gets to drive about in her 07 truck, I get to throw wrenches, swearwords and money at the Renault, occasionally at the trucks and I do the maintenance on the moderns. It's a trade-off, after all, marriage is sometimes about compromise Sadly the only retro I had for a while I thought was sinfully ugly she likes the look of (Ventora FE, the one with the fugly grille). My Bluebirds, Victor, Cinquecento etc she hates, though those cars had a Christine element to them, they all broke in some way or other when she rode in them. She did say I could have another Hillman Superminx though, which is promising but unlikely. She's just saving up hope for a '65 ragtop Mustang, '71 Challenger or something retromodern like the new Challenger. --Phil

I'm lucky that Mrs L likes old stuff too. Though this is partly that she is a sensible girl and doesn't see the point in wasting massive amounts of money on new cars when old ones do the job just as well and are cooler.

I too am lucky in that my lass thinks new cars are ugly and boring - but to be honest she would rather like a car to just work when she wants to get somewhere, and if that means a modern is needed then thats fine. (actually it just gives me an excuse to build another car, one that look right, but has modern running gear ) Its all about being fair really, I earns my money, pay for living, and whats left is there to spend on nice things for her and the cars. Plus I'm a great believer in each having your own hobbies, ok so you might be involved in each others groups sometimes, but not too much as we all need our space sometimes!

My mrs doesn't see the point in older cars, expensive waste of money as far as she can tell, but she'll not grumble too loud as she knows car's came before she did and it's a bit part of who I am. I think the main reason for grumbeling currently is I'm almost out of drive space (plus she just found out I'm bidding for another car on eblag!)

I'm lucky i guess, my missus would have a copy of her old 1300E back if we could afford one and chose a 4x4 pickup for its usefullnes when i asked her exactly why she was driving a seven seat people carrier when we only have 3 kids between us, but she's not really a girly girl anyway, happy to lay tiles, hang doors or have a manure fight with the kids.

I'm very lucky in that Lady Hardcore pretty much 'gets it' where my love of rust cool old cars is concerned and really enjoys the RR community (most of you that have met me have most likely met her too) ;D For example, the Gathering last year she couldn't get off work Fri & Sat am so I went on down without her, then she got the train (from Brighton!) & I picked her up from the station Sat afternoon! Good effort! She also has a Mk1 Fiesta as her 1st car (actually she had a Mini as her first car but I don't think she ever drove that, I hated working on it so sold it on) which I will gradually improve for her as she gets used to driving again (has been ages - doesn't actually have a license yet!) We also have our first 'joint project' which is our Mk1 Escort Campervan, something we both wanted and can enjoy together

^^Indeed they are, they're also the route of all evil but hey, you still have to love em lol! My gf's always been understanding about where I stand with cars and has never stopped me doing what I want with em (even if she did it wouldn't make much difference lol). She's never stopped me working on them or helping friends with theirs or anything and often sits with me if she's about while i'm tatting handing me bits n bobs, making me a coffee etc. She loves the retro stuffs especially the luxo barge type stuff so she suits me to a T she's got a MK1 MX5 and loves it to bits, she's not a massive lover of new cars bar the Chrysler 300C, Suzuki Swift and VW Scirrocco which tbh I love the look of myself. She loves watching the drifting and also like to have a lil' skid in her MX5 so defo can't knock her I'm definately amongst one of the lucky ones

My other half like retros to look at, she thinks Allegros are cool. But she doesn't want the expense of keeping one running, she had enough of that when she had a mini

But she doesn't want the expense of keeping one running, she had enough of that when she had a mini Funnily enough my ex chose a mk1 escort because it was cheaper to run than a modern car, free tax, cheap insurance, not bad on fuel, servicing is cheap and can more easily be done at home and absolutely as reliable as anything modern. All of the above relys on you buying a decent car or at least rebuilding one properly though, sensible choices like swopiing points for electronic ignition and making sure everything is in good condition and not worn out. Her mk1 is still going just fine four years or so after its rebuild.

My wife is not bothered at all about old cars, she drives a MG ZT 2003 model that she loves and so do I and I drive what ever I want, I don't ask I just buy it and turn up at home with it.

Because of our differing tastes, my partner and I plan to have one small car each since we could never decide on one big car between us. I like old cars where you can see the mechanical stuff and you haven't got a billion driving aids, he prefers newer cars with bodgability and lots of gadgets. So, he's looking at getting something like a mid to late 90s Micra and I'll stick to my mid eighties Polo.

Well, my ex was into moderns, and I was into bangers I could afford. I made sure that she had a car that wouldn't let her down. She hated me messing with old cars so much in the end, she borrowed money from her mum to make me buy a modern, which was the Lexus IS.
Within a year of my doing what she wanted, she finished things after 15 years. Then I met someone who drove 80's cars because they were cheap and her dad was a mechanic so he kept them just about running, perfect you might think, but she was a nut.
So now I'm single, have the IS, and also have a Saab turbo. Plus a couple of ladies who I'm not letting close enough to influence me, who like the idea of old cars, but haven't got a clue to the needs. They get their attention, the cars get theirs. I get mine, all happy.

I'm lucky, she loves my old cars! Loves em to bits, WONT Drive the fiesta, complains the clutch is high (fair point, I'm used to it)
Will drive the Sierra reluctantly even tho it's the hardest thing she's ever driven and only last weekend when driving said "Is this thing getting heavier and slower to drive?"
We replaced her Sierra with a semi-modern 1996 Civic for a number of reasons. She loves it to bits, better still it takes care of daily dutys taking the work load off the oldies.
Win win!

All my exes have tolerated my cars, some stepping the effort up to 'like' for certain ones or whatever. The last one though, she actually liked them, and got to drive one of mine. She had her modern though, but I had her half convinced. Then it ended - great plan that was When I settle down it will be with one with appreciates retros though, preferably with one of her own. I want someone who will share the passion, get excited about the same things, and be ok with spending our money on them. (separate accounts are a fast-track to marital discord!)
