Does this mean one day us rodders will be able to don our Von Dutch t-shirts once again? Don't get me started on that, I actualy had an argument with a stranger in town one night 'cos they had no idea Who Von-dutch was and infact had no ideas about Kustom Kulture or hot rods in general, even though they had the Hat and shirt!!! T**T

Not to take this off topic... but half the people wearing surf and skate gear have no idea about that culture either... This is true, neither do the legions of suburb 'rebel' teenagers who go round in Che Guevara T-shirts, if they were made aware of what their supposed hero actually represented they'd likely die of shock, or just become a xenophobic staunch conservative like daddy, instead of hero-worshipping a version of Guevara that's about as true to life as Robin Hood and giving real leftists everywhere a bad name.

Yeah but it's annoying when something you like/love becomes associated with mindless celebrities and gets hoisted up to mythical status to then be "so last season" 6 months later. Mostly with fasion brands they are just that, mainly fasion that stems from technical clothing of one sort or another..be that fast Wiking surf shorts or skaters gear etc, There was so much more history behind Ed Roth that to ignore it or be ignorant to what he was about and then look down your nose at it when it became "to popular" just "Grinds my gears" Do a google image search for Ed roth and look at all the quality stuff that comes up and try the same for Von dutch and you get Celebs/hats and shirts

Posted this on antother forum, mainly hatches and MSG'd rice steamers but with a bit more explanation. 50 reads and no reply yet. I don't think they 'get it' ;D
On the other hand I'd expect many of them to be wearing Von Dutch as discussed and their idea of a 'mod' is an air kit from Halfords, so, meh.

Kenneth 'Von Dutch' Howard was probably as prolific as Roth, just no so concerned with the whole self publicity of it all. I admire them both and am humbled by their abilities, especially Howard as I'm trying to learn to stripe.

Looks like a great show, I hope they get it made - and then I hope we get it over here. Although I fear it may mean we like Roth less instead of more. Looking at someone's work, you can make your mind up about the kind of person they are - but seeing or hearing about the actual person can make things seem a little different. Anybody see the 'Hot Rod Build Off' on RealTime? Based on his work Jimmy Shine can only be a top bloke - but after a bit of TV time, I found myself thinking what a brat he was (sorry Jimmy, if you're reading this!).

I haven't got to see any of those other shows with Boyd or Shine but I've heard all the stories from people who have. These guys look truly nuts though and they're willing to put on a show for pure entertainment value. Hopefully that's what it'll be like...
But I know what you mean about Shine. I didn't know he'd been on one of those build-off shows but he does make 'appearances' at rod shows for his 'fans'. WTF? Hotrodders don't have fan clubs?!!!

Have you seen his pic in this months CC? Looks full of himself in that as well. Nice work though. Note: Large Roth picture from earlier in the thread is now A3 sized and stuck on the office wall! Hot rod culture at work - cool.

What a great point and so so true. When you look at someones work and you see the things you like you think "Wow I'd do that too, this guy is just like meeee we could go to the pub and get along just fine." Sadly it seems most people with an obsessive ability in something tend to be a bit odd in their personality. Particulary on the surface.

Re.Jonny69 - Why wouldn't Shine have a fan club if he has 'fans'..? I totally agree with the sentiment that he isn't/shouldn't be a personality just for being him..but... Surely, if there are kids drooling over Shine's cars and playing hotwheels and want to be in a 'club it's better than watching wrestling on the tellybox ? Don't disagree with you tho, I'm playing devil's advocate - he's probably up his own .
