A friend is currently having three Fiat 500s restored in Poland, very cheap rates and the work we've seen so far is spot on. If you're planning a long term project, maybe a year or so then it could make a lot of sense if you find somebody you can trust and fancy a road trip either end. A lot of people are also shipping engines to Australia and New Zealand to be built, low shipping costs and great conversion rates mean they can get twice the engine for the same expense as in this country. One example of globalisation I can go with! ;D

How is the Nysa getting on then? Can't wait to see it restored! The thing is, even when you consider that they can some bits for cheap in Poland, you can't ignore the fact that these guys are working for a bloody pittance, even on long term projects, compared to one of their British counterparts anyway. One of the sad facts about the fall of communism is that the majority of people aren't any better off now than they were under Soviet rule. They can critisise the guys in charge for sure, but there's still plenty of reason to complain, and whearas once everyone was skint but their livelihood was secure unless they p*ssed off the party, now there's no guarantee that their jobs will be there for them when times get hard, and there's no guarantee that the competitors at home and abroad won't eat them alive. The result is people who are clearly very talented people working for a wage that would insult a person of their talent in the UK. Sad really, the joys of capitalism eh, even the talented poor get poorer and the talentless rich get richer.

I'm not an expert on Polish politics, they may be getting paid a 'pittance' in comparison to our wages, but how do their wages compare to others around them? I would like to think that their skills, and more importantly their entreprenuerism is making them their fortune?

How is the Nysa getting on then? Can't wait to see it restored! i'll try and get an update done soon. with the whole poland thing, having been there quite a few times and not just to the big cities, the fall of communism has had a major effect. theres to ends to the scale...theres those that got lucky and found there way into a good business and now drive a big BMW and live in a brand new apartment and then there are those that were working in the big factories that closed and havent found work since. they live in a little sleepy town with nothing to do. the end of communism hasnt put a stop to all that, in the country you go through loads of little villages stuck in a time warp from about 1950. people living in these little 2 room wooden houses. we once rented a house in poland in a little country town, the house next to us was a traditional wooden building. it had 2 rooms and there was a whole family living in there. this still isnt as uncommon as people think. i never saw poland under communist rule, and i am not suggesting that it was better, but it certainly isnt as good as everyone thought it was going to be.

This is interesting- (Ignoring the ethics for a moment...) What classic motors do they have alot of in Poland that are worth a fair bit over here? I'm thinking someone could go to Poland, buy something of that nature (presumably for peanuts), hand it over to the restoration place and have it shipped over here when its all restored and minty

its mostly all Eastern European metal over there. stuff that would be considered classics over there have mostly all been restored any are worth just as much, if not more than it would be over here. to get a 'classic' you would be buying something eastern european, like a Syrena...which would be very cool, but i don't think you could sell it over here for all that much

I would like to think that their skills, and more importantly their entreprenuerism is making them their fortune? Quite random, but apparently a Polish teacher gets the equivalent to £150-£200 a month.. not sure what standard teacher or whatever, just info from a Polish guy at work. Might help with a comparison... Cheers, Greg.
