I swapped the box on my 106 over the weekend, and took every precaution to not spill any oil, or get any on my clothes/hands/face/hair. I did pretty well apart from spilling about an eggcup full, and then kneeling in it. Patch about 3 inch round on the trousers - No worries I think, its not much!
I put them in the washer with a tshirt, boil wash with plenty of powder (and a bit of washing up liquid for good measure)
3 hours a LOT of foam later, both the tshirt and the shorts now STINK of gearbox oil, worse than ever.
Another boil wash - Same again.
Now I can write these off, but the washer itself now stinks. I've run it empty 3 times, I've rinsed it out with the hose. I've even filled it through the drawer with a garden hose til it was full to the top of the door and set it on a rinse cycle 3 times.
I put an old towel in it yesterday as a test. - Went in clean and smelling fresh, came out smelling awful.
Any tips? I've had the utility room floor half an inch deep in suds twice and spend hours, and it doesn't seem to be working.
Surely there is a "nemesis" to gearbox oil? I'm getting desperate as I'm running out of clothes to wear!

I just read this to my wife. she said "OMG. Buy a new washer." To be honest, I think she is right... I may have made the same mistake, gearbox oil is very smelly and very sticky, and the boil washing has most likely transferred most of it to the innards of the washing machine. Sorry.. For future reference, £3 asda/primark jeans make good rags after you get gear oil on them ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

unicorn tears apparantly will get rid of the smell.
sorry not helpful but I really don't know how to get rid of it from a washing machine. it does leave the floor after a few months though.
edited for actual response. i've just been told oxyclean will deal with it but it has to be in huge quantities. hope that helps.

try dishwasher tablets that remove all the gunk from the inside of dishwashers, works wonders on washing machines i was told recently. i did what you did, but with more gear oil, but never had an issue after about 3 washes of other clothes ![:-X](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png)

Right, so I've got the unicorn, how do I get the tears? I tried a chinese burn, but it's no good. Perhaps use emotional means? Force him to watch an entire episode of glee?
I've read that vinegar is "good for getting rid of smells" and also that people use it for getting limescale out of washers. When it finishes this cycle I'll give some a go - If not I'll try the oxyclean!
Can't afford a new washer, lol. I might end up taking the sod to pieces and spending a few hours with a pot of cheap thinners and some blueroll manually wiping every surface clean.
OH! I've just remembered they sometimes have a sump and a filter. I'll see if I can empty/clean if.

Well - I go to the washer to see if its done, and its half full off water with "f-05" on the display. Seems like the pump to empty it has packed up. curse word!

Deodorised diesel removes it. I've scrubbed my overalls with Gunk hand cleaner before and it gets rid of the smell of EP90. Doesn't do the fabric any good but does get rid of a lot of the smell. Wouldn't recommend it for the inside of the washing machine though.

Well I drained it and fixed the pump. No filter in this.
I put about 200ml of vinegar in and ran it, which seems to have helped quite a lot. I'm going to pop up to the shop and get some more vinegar and try again!

A capful of bleach should do the trick. I put clothes through soaked in gear oil from time to time and haven't suffered yet. Bleach tends to destroy most stuff. Well - I go to the washer to see if its done, and its half full off water with "f-05" on the display. Seems like the pump to empty it has packed up. jolly pain in the backside! That looks like a Dyson error code. CRO1? Might be because the Dyson has a fibreglass tub and it's attacked the plastic?

Nah, its an indesit.
You know, I never even thought of bleach. I feel stupid because it's pretty obvious tbh!
It takes elevens off porcelain quite well, so should shift gearbox oil. It's just running a boil wash with 3 bottles of vinegar, I'll see how it is and perhaps try a drop of bleach to be safe

sod the clothes, sod the smell, stuff the washing machine. Does the gearbox swap work correctly? Has it made the car better? Get your priorities right ;-)

Just asked me wife she says the only way to get the smell out the cloths is to air dry em outside and wash em 3 or 4 times, she uses lenor with any old powder. I do it all the time ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) ALL the time, try getting a pint of it in your hair when its about 18 inches long I use washing up liquid to get it out me hair or jizer ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) then lots of conditoner ;D

Have you got a cat? Blame it on that... Or invite a male cat in, get him to mark the territory, the whiff is similar.
Not sure this is any help but I got some water based degreaser, i.e. harmless / no solvents, and it did a fine job of removing the slick of EP in my garage. Praps a rinse wash with some of that in would work? Risk to the machine praps. I'd go for the cat option.
