have any of you guys ever come across a fill from the bottom gearbox?
i am repaying a favour i owe to someone, by changing their gearbox oil in their too modern bmw e36 328 auto.
what a bloody game, the fill plug is at the bottom, so the usual approach of squidge the squishy bottle until you can't squidge no more has so far just left me covered in atf.
trying to locate a pump of some sort for tomorrow morning. so i can use the power of my arms to pump from the bottle up into the gearbox,
are these fill from the bottom boxes normal on auto cars?
i know this isnt retro, but basically it solidifies my hatred for working on anything with more than 3 moving components and/or newer than 1912.

Has it got a dipstick for the the auto box fluid level?
I always fill my autos up thro that - it doesn't take that long either - warm the fluid up in their containers in a bucket of hot water

to check level, you take filler plug out, start engine with car in park, and if a small stream flows out. that means its level. if nothing. then means you add more. its a completely rubbish idea. but i guess based around the selling point of "lifetime gearbox..never need to change oil" which is a load of old honk anyway.
don't spose anyone got any bright ideas of what could be used to pump it in,and that i can get hold of tomorrow?
think i'll tell him he should have just taken it to agarage and let them rip him off!

You can get containers that you pressurise by hand-pumping them - WaxOyl sprayers and that kind of thing. Don't know whether you could adapt something to "pump" atf?
'tis a sh!te set-up... no doubt done so that the dealerships owns your soul for the lifetime of the vehicle.

Can you do this, with the filler tube going through a bung?

Most modern auto boxes are like this, you fill a special container with gear oil, then it hangs from the bonnet catch or any point that is higher than the gearbox, there is a tube that runs from the container and screws into the bottom of the gear box, you then fill the gearbox by switching a lever and the oil flows into the box. then you check the level by connecting a diagnostic machine to the vehicle and waiting untill the gearbox oil reaches a prescribed temperature, when the correct temperature is reached you undo the filler plug and either add more oil or drain some untill there is only a small trickle coming out. job done.
The down side of this is you need three things
1: the correct filling container for that vehicle 2: the correct diagnostic machine 3: a vehicle hoist.
If you rely on the methods for filling older auto boxes there is no way you'll get the correct level.

well i have the car on a ramp so that helps, but i have very insufficient tooling available to me, so basically i just got to fill the b*stard in as many bodgey type ways as i can and whack as much of the stuff in until i give up.
i really hate this. my e30 is lovely to fill up, find a suitable hole in the body stick a tube through, and let gravity do the work.
wonder if he will mind me stripping out his car and converting it to manual? i'd probably be better off doing that.

You've obviously let all the smoke out of the wiring loom, just get some more smoke and syringe it back in!! then quickly wrap the wires with electrical tape to keep it in. Sorted ;D

some of the mercs have a very small dipstick or something at the very top iirc.
i know some of them have a (main dealer only) seal that breaks when you try and check the level.
if the atf level is wrong it'll fubar something, usually expensive.
