I'm loving the stuff done by Exile and Billy Lane Well kinda.....now I've got the wife 'up the duff' I'm not gonna have as much money to spend as I would like.......so unless I find a MK1 Polo for next to nothing it's not going to happen for a while

After watching several episodes of 'Build or Bust' on Men and Motors, I've been thinking about building a bike. I've heard from a few people that you can order new bare frames from the states, but want to know if anyone knows of companies in the UK that can supply them? or can I just fabricate my own frame? Also, would I have to get the Bike through an SVA test before it's road legal? Any suggestions for a good doner bike? I've been thinking about a Triumph around the 1300cc mark.....? I'm thinking of a doing something a cross between this: and this: so it kinda looks like this: Thoughts / suggestions? Getting a Triumph twin to 1300cc is neigh on impossible, the large triumph twins were originally designed to be a 500, then enlarged to 650, and again to 750 for the T140. A tuning firm who's name I forget used to produce big bore replacement barrels up to around 900cc/1000cc but they were strictly for the dragstrip only. A road going engine with one of these kits would require a rebuild every 100 miles. Something else to consider is hard tail/rigid frames are an aquired taste, read bloody uncomfortable. Sprung seats do help but they arent going to give youa super smooth ride. To see if a hard tail is for you get a normal twin shock road bike, replace the shocks with solid bar and take for a test ride - be warned it may give u a surprise just how much they hurt. If it's got to be a triumph another thing to consider is the rarity of complete engines - (I don't want to upset anyone, especially after DP made some suggestions) but the likelyhood of getting hold of a complete running trumpet twin at an autojumble are low. Ebay occasionally turns up examples from abdondend projects. You might be better off going to a specialist classic Triumph shop, be warned some of them are bit snotty and a hint thats going to be used in a chop may result in them refusing to sell! The Triumph twin engine aint the best design in terms of reliability and longevity - and the prices for rebuilt ones are eyewatering. Personally I'd like to suggest the XS650, J parralel twin design with 100000+ mile capability (one of the most reliable Japanese engine design's) and with complete, scruffy, running bikes available from £300 at American importers they certainly are affordable.

do a search for 'bobbers' if you intend to use a Brit bike, proper 'ard stuff. I was gonna say that, deffo sounds like you after a bobber more than a chopper
