OK, how do the new car tax bands announced today work with lots of our cars?
My 1.8 litre Datsun is 2 months too young from being tax exempt, but it is old enough not to have an emmisions test on the MOT. Which band will it now be in? I have a horrible feeling it will just be quietly slipped into one of the higher bands...
Thoughts and comments?

I think this 'band' carry-on only applies to post-2001 motors. pre-2001 cars just get slapped with the standard rate for 1 years' tax, which is about £170 or so isn't it?

I think all this emissions malarkey only affects new cars. Ours stay the same (although they've upped it by a fiver)

Ah yes, just downloaded the report...
"rates for pre-2001 registered cars and light goods vehicles in the lower band will be frozen with the higher band increased by £5;"

so is this a new thing that old cars don't need emmisions testing? and what date is that for?
i hope they keep the two rates of tax for older cars, and i don't end up paying 170 on the kitten instead of 120.
shame its 3 years too new to be tax expempt.

I don't trust the government will keep old cars free. just a paranoid thought, sorry.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

OK, so the Merc is now £210, instead of £160. Bum The Datsun is now £165 instead of £160. Hmm but the Smart is now £40 instead of £100. Yay! So, we're now £5 better off then...

Yup, there are none. The Smart Petrol gives out 113gm/km Accordign to Smart the Smart Diesel gives out 96 But accordign to the government it puts out 116gm/km because it suits them to say that. There is an experimental LPG/Electric Prius that manages 96, but isn't on sale yet.

I thought that on pre-2001 cars, it was a cheaper rate for cars under 1500cc... and this has been frozen.. anything else is a fiver more expensive than last year.

Oh who knows, it's all bo11ox anyway. With all the variants, there are now about 15 car tax bands. Road tax is irrelevant anyway compared to the tax we pay on petrol over a year. Like £210 is going to worry a new Range Rover owner. The increase is about half a tank of fuel.
Either hit people with big cars heavily - like £1000/year or more, or scrap tax and stick a couple of pence on fuel - that way it's all relative anyway. Simple.
