To help celebrate my 1000th post (woohoo!), I'd like to start a thread about standard car sounds, not bad noises such as big ends or rattles / squeeks, but engine / exhaust notes.
I got think about this from the TopGear thread about the Spyker that was featured on Sunday nights show. It had such an awsome sound and I started thinking about the last time I heard such a nice sound. Modern cars all sound flat and dull (ok, apart from the new M3 or Maserati 350), or just all sound alike. A Ferrari 360 Modena passed me the other day and it sounded curse word - all high-pitched and whinny!
So, here's my two suggestions for the best car sound I've ever heard:
TVR350i
MGCGT
So, only STANDARD engine noises, so no modified 5ltr Herald (RMad!) or Hotrods.

Mercedes Maclaren SLR ,..
My old Alfa 33 (the straight through exhaust helped), made a LOVELY noise.
My favourite exhaust noises are the popping noises that some cars make,.. what causes that?

The Lamborghini in the opening sequence of 'The Cannonball Run'.
Or a plymouth Superbird.

These are nice:
Audi Ur-quattro Rover V8 with straight through exhaust
quite like the sound of a storming VW Flat 4 engine, and the Porsche Flat-6 is cracking too

For completely standard cars, some old turbos sounded nice. Escort RST , Renault 5 GT Turbo. The Ur Quattro as already mentioned but any Audi 5 cylinder warble is good.(audi 90 etc) A 16V Golf standard system is quite deep and throaty too. My least favourite current sound is any Kompressor Mercedes. They just sound wrong

Listening to a black Firebird convertible at a stop light yesterday, just idling was good. When it blasted off a couple blocks later ;D ;D ;D ;D
And I don't even care much for them!

any Audi 5 cylinder warble is good.(audi 90 etc) true... ;D strangely enough, Land Rover TD5 engines sound nice too (if you can block out the diesel 'rattle')- got the typical 5 pot traits ;D

Lancia Stratos in full chat on an RAC historic Rally yonks ago.
It was dusk and it sounded like there were wolves in those trees. Then the screaming and the banging and the flames and the popping. You can't stick that in a small blue pill!

Tuned Hillman Imp engines sound lovely, (if a bit deafening), and Volvo 2/7/9 series 4 cylinder inline engines have a distinct kind of rattle, but they're too quiet. One of the best sounds is a 2-stroke Foden or Commer lorry.

I may be biased but 900Turbos have areal muscley warble slightly similar to scoobies but more refined. Its actually caused by a lack of space in the engine bay(!) so that the exhaust manifold is of unequal length so that it fits to the turbo. Also lack of back pressure isn't an issue on turbocharged cars as the turbo sucks the air out anyway so 900Ts do have the poping as you take your foot off the loud peddle ;D
