So basically I love your truck and have been following the thread over the years. I'm also a graphic designer (yep) and really couldn't resist your challenge. I've gone for period correct fonts where possible (Bureau Grotesque, Beton, Rockwell) and pulled inspiration from fire-trucks and Austin Healey badges/ Manuals from the time. I think Cream or ivory-off-white would look best, though white would probably look fine and 'mint'. Hope you like. If so please do PM me and I can sort you out scaleable artwork for vinyl etc no problem... Stunned and PM sent That does looks stunning littlepixel. Only comment is I'd make is that the 'Purbeck' typeface could be more "English' - maybe Gill Sans? I did a blog post on one of my blogs about classic English fonts - it may be useful and is at: www.classicenglishstyle.com/classic-english-fonts/.

Thanks Iambsdale - I agree the Purbeck text wasn't maybe working soo well - I didn't really have any context for the word so it was kind of just put there as a possible; That font (bureau grotesque) is a classic print font of the time but you're right it doesn't have that quintessential englishness about it - esp at that massive size. I did use GIll though for the 'company text' - I guess I was trying to mix it up a bit have loads of 'correct' fonts to trick onlookers into thinking it's always been that way. Your blog is really nice btw - and weird actually - I was considering using Festival titling a bit somewhere but wasn't sure the fake 3Dness would translate that well. Same for Profil/Kaine. I think I'd (both of us actually haha) better stop being all font geeky now - this is a car site after all Anyway - I think the plan might be to avoid vinyl on the side panels for now (paint finish not up to being vinyled is apparently a worry) so this is perhaps a non-issue. Thanks everyone for the good words - doing this sort of thing is totally what makes me happy (I do mostly web stuff so don't get to be so typographic) and keeps me out of trouble of the evenings... Sunday's update is that we did a lot of work for what seemed to be little progress. The G.A.K. finished off the last wheelarch trim so after using the stretcher to get the curve Then quite a long time sanding and polishing to get the marks out While Dangerous was tracing earths my job was to chamfer 30 pan head screws to be able to mount the headlight plates and then turn the slow vehicle light bodies for the numberplate panel. I got one screw turned and the lathe packed up so that meant I had some explaining to do Monday morning The plan was also to mill out some reliefs on the amber lenses to use some Ebay LED emergency flashers but the lenses are too brittle So that meant a Dremel session that evening The lights aren't great looking but they're hidden behind 50 year-old lenses. I didn't really wan't to use LEDs but I need the reliability as everything is going to be assembled with clear silicone rubber because once the numberplate is riveted on I won't be able to get at anything. Dangerous and I got on with the rear lights and steps. Doesn't sound much but that's 6 lights and 14 bulbs to assemble and wire up. It's a bit bling but 13 bulbs worked first time and when we worked out which was the bulb that wasn't pushed in all 14 did Hopefully that's enough light that I won't get rear-ended by some half asleep HGV driver. Storing stuff on the bed is very convenient but when you're a klutz like me fumbling a hamburger light gets you a black mark (which will polish out) and a nasty scratch (which won't). The G.A.K. reckons the paint is a bit 'soft' so vinyls on the bed sides are out And now this side is finished. YAY!

As Mr Vulgalor points out, it needs something on those eyebrows. It's a bit bare up there, but looking good so far.

georgeb is onto something there, your truck needs Groucho eyebrows on the front. It's come along very, very nicely, I don't envy you sorting out all those bulbs, I get annoyed having to do as many as three.

Ok ok it's a great idea so I'll go with RACE CARS ---- IN TRANSIT. The pluralisation of CAR balances it a bit more and allows us to make it a double decker in future without buying a bit more vinyl.

Do you have any of the red paint you can mix up (if not get some ASAP as you will need some touch up in the coming weeks/months). If so mix a tiny amount and using a fine art brush 'dab' some red paint into the scratch. You may need to do this 2-3 times (not all at once!) to build up the thickness to be a little proud of the panel paint.
Leave a few days to harden then mask up the paint around the raised lump and gently flat back most of the excess paint (about 800 grit wet n dry with plenty of water will do). When its mostly the same height as the panel paint remove masking tape and flat it back with fingertip and then flat block with 1500 and then 2000 wet n dry (with plenty of water again).
Then polish with G3 and G10 to finish. You should end up with an invisible repair - at worst it will need pointing out to see it.

Mark, Thanks for the advice but luckily for me paint damage is the particular responsibility of the Gas Axe Kid as it's his day job. That's if I can drag him away from his current project where he's restoring a 911 T/R for a client with 'only' 6 weeks of welding to get the shell back to pristine. I got the Paint Fairies to mix me up a batch of touch-up when they did the last lot of painting. Cheers, Ian

All things being equal, you are going to need a lot of these painted in the near future. That being the case I'm sure that "Paint Fairies" alludes to their ability to work magic with colour rather than any of the other possible interpretations.

Optimus got hand painted by my mate Andy who does everything from animated models for low budget horror films to large scale sci-fi concepts to Warhammer dioramas. He painted with a very fine brush the bottom of the milled-out letters and only halfway up the 2mm sides with paint he 'aged' to match the original Bedford lettering colour. The bloke's a genius.
