Hi Guys Just be given a 1935ish Sunbeam bicycle ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I`ve posted it on here because i`m going to modify it ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) (but no chopping so could be put back to standard if i feel the need) I`m thinkng satin black (maybe gloss ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ) frame and forks, i`m keeping the rear rack and mudguards(fenders)but not the chainguard. with alloy mtb rims powdercoated in a bright green, Whitwall tyres, Coaster brake (so no controls or cables on the bars) Upside down beachcruiser bars with leather grips, Leather brooks saddle. Let me know what you think Cheers Adrian P.s Would love some pinstriping on the mudguards if anyone could reccomend someone cheap ;D ![](http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr61/KernowKrawler/bikes001.jpg) ![](http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr61/KernowKrawler/bikes004.jpg) ![](http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr61/KernowKrawler/bikes002.jpg)

great bike
like your plans.
might be a bit low with the smaller diameter mtb rims. though fat tyres will make up some of the rolling diameter. these prewar bikes were a bit close to the ground as standard.

Hi If i left it standard i would never use it,(same as the last owner who left it in an open woodshed for 20 years) And it was built to be ridden ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) All the mods i do will be reversible so it won`t be ruined Cheers Adrian

You'd be a fool to change a thing on that! Just buy a modern bike, I'd love to roll that exactly as it is!

Hi I`ve got loads of modern bikes (i`ve worked in a bike shop for 20 years) Is`nt that like saying why modify an anglia when you can buy a mondeo?? ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

No, but it is like fitting 17's & pimped out interior to one ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Nah it's your bike & you should do what you want, I just think it looks awesome as is. I ride a 1950's raleigh, completely original in fairly good nick but with some genuine patina. I love it.

I found a 1945 Raleigh in similar condition. I pumped up the tyres, stuck a wicker basket on the front and rode it like that. It's great to ride - so long as there aren't any hills that is. A rub down with an oily rag will make it look tidier without losing any patina. Then again, I need one of those chainguards for mine so mod the bike as much as you like and let me have it ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

that is properly nice! I would suggest new wheels, seat and bar tape, leave the rest. I've got a 1940ish Magneet which I've posted previously, all I did to that was replace the seat, flip the handlebars upside down and change the headlight bracket a little and it turns from looking like yours to looking like an early motorbike. Would love a chainguard like the one youve got to finish off mine.

What brakes do you plan to use? With MTB rims I don't imagine you'll be able to find rim brakes with enough drop (plus you'll have to modify the forks and bridge because yours is on rod brakes so there are no mounting holes). Drum brake on the front and a coaster on the rear?
Personally I would do the above (plus a two-speed kickback hub because with the weight you might need an extra ratio, plus they're just cool and have no external cables or anything, Sturmey Archer still make them if you can't find one) and polish up the frame with some wire wool leaving it much tidier and shiny in places, but still with a lot of patina. Then oil it or clearcoat it.

Hi I`ve just bought a 3 speed sturmey archer rear hub with drum brake off the Bay, I`m just waiting to come across a front one, I`m not going to be able to run mtb wheels (forks are to narrow) So i`m going to fit 26x1 3/8 alloy rims instead of the 26x 1 1/2 stainless rims thats fitted, I`m going to run Schwalbe Delta Cruisers in creme and have the frame forks etc powder coated in chocolate brown with gold Sunbeam decals and lug lining (if i can old a paintbrush steady enough) So a Pashley Guvnor replica really ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) Cheers Adrian

Sounds good! Powdercoat in brown and gold decals is an excellent idea IMO. Lug lining isn't too hard, I've used enamel modelling paints before with great results - have a rag with white spirit handy in case you do go off-course though.
