Right, I have some 8J deep dish alloys, which when mounted with the 195/60 series tyres protude about 1" from the front wings. What is the law regarding wide wheels? My understanding is that the tire thread should be "flush" with the arches. If this is the case, then I can use 185/60 or 175/60 series tyres instead? I will also be using camber plates/strut tops to "tuck" the struts and induce negative camber , so this may help the cause abit

MAybe with 175's might work, just got my tape out, 175's give about 20mm of strech over 60mm (looks nice btw) thats almost an inch. Add that to a few more degs of camber with a very slight rolled arch = phat looking legal ride. Might want a bit more roll on the front to save scrubbage tho

I think they are allowed to stick out by half an inch. But where I got this information from I have no idea probably bloke down the pub ;D

If you look from above the arch and you can see tread (not just any part of the tyre) it's a fail. That's how I've always understood it anyway. That said, the likelyhood is, unless it looks crazy dangerous, the plod would probably only ask you to change them anyway.

When I had my LWB Pajero the tyres used to stick out of the arches by about an inch each side ;D

the kittens with factory fitted alloys (10x5 cosmics i think) stuck out the arches about an inch(about 3/4" of tread), as when i fetted the slotmags they stuck out, but they are no different sizes to the standard alloys so asked on the reliant forum (thats an odd place) and noone even knew of any laws.

I think the tread has to be covered by the arch to use the car on the queens highway, BUT, for the MOT, as long as it doesn't scrub, and isn't more than 1" 'out' from the body, you can get away with it.
Best thing to do is ask a "friendly" tester

Fantastic, thinking out of the box .... ;D ;D I am not worried about the MOT testers , just don't fancy the local plod pulling me over, thats it. Gives them a chance to go round the car and nit pick other bits n pieces

As I recall, the Construction And Use of Motor Vehicles Act states that road going vehicles "must be fitted with mudguards or other bodywork such that spray or debris is not thrown up by the road wheels causing a danger to other road users". There was nothing about 1" or 1/2" or whatever. Now whats in SVA may be a totally different matter but our cars are not subject to SVA restrictions (yet!) just the C&U Regas which were in place at the time at the time of manufacture and any superceding regulation under the Road Trafic Act.
