I recently got the v5 through for the charade convertible I bought off here and its listed as a 3dr hatchback. I'm pretty sure the roof chop/conversion was professionally done when the car was pretty new (25yrs ago) but nothing is on the v5. From an insurance point of view I'm worried what would happen if I had an accident in it if it was insured as it is. I'm also unsure what they would say if I declared a "mod" as convertible .... I'm worryingly thinking that the car might need an SVA, which would have been a lot easier to sort out when it was originally done. My pics of the car are curse word, so heres one of a previous owners ... taken @ RR gathering? ![](http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k145/skattrd/Charade/me.jpg)

Think if you have proof that it was done years (like 15 or so) ago then you should be exempt from any tests, not sure when rules came in but late 90's i think - if you can proove it's before then you should be ok.
speak to the chaps at Ace advise

hi, if you've documentation showing the conversion was carried out before 1998 then you might have a chance in getting v5c description changed.
best bet is to get in touch with ace.
good luck.
cheers chris.

Hi, this is an awkward one as you need to find proof of when this was done. It SHOULD have been noted on your logbook at the time as it would have required inspection if done AFTER registration, and if done before registration it would have been in the details from the start.
Even coachbuilders didn't /don't have a handle of the full scope of the regulations.
To stand any chance of getting the details amended without having to under go BIVA ( SVA is only in use for Goods vehicles ) you will need to prove when it was done ie find the manuafcturers and prove it is one of theirs not a later replica.
Dependant on at what stage of its life the mod was carried out the reg may change.
If before reg ,meaning teh logbook details were not altered at the time ,the original reg would remain. If converted after 1984 it would be issued with a Q. If converted after 1998 it would be issued with a Q ( modified monococque) but only after passing BIVA .
A standard car would generally pass with only a few mods but a convertible brings in a few inyernal / external projection issues.

Not sounding good ... The car was first registered 1/8/85 and I am unsure when the conversion was done or who did it. It looks like I've some investigating to do. I'll try Daihatsu UK and see if they know anything about it, but I'm not hopeful. The registration ends in KO, which I think is Maidstone, so I'll see if there's a Daihatsu dealership down there that may know about the car.
