Okidoki lads and ladettes,
Want to get rid of the Onion, its in the For Sale section and up on other forums, college etc but so far no interest. Autotrader seem a lot of money and apparently E-bay has a free cars listing weekend on at the moment- so, want to get it on Flea-bay!
Never sold a car on it so kind of new to it (only a graphics card a year or so ago) Basically wanting advice on how to sell a car well, Do's and don't's etc.
Hoping to get £250-£300 for it.
Cheers guys.

Don't bother with free listings day for a start! Think about it: basic supply & demand Lots of pics, click the 'gallery' box, use a subtitle and the £9.95 featured category to hock it to the top of the page. Good description, in proper english, with easy to read paragraph breaks. Will cost about £16 all in, which is still cheaper than auto trader. hth

fiver on motors isn't it?
I don't bother with reserves. I've always got good dollar from no-reserve auctions.... let the market decide - there's always someone willing to go a couple of quid higher.
A reserve just says 'i will settle for £xxx' and you'll rarely get more than 1 0r 2 bids over reserve. Unless you're selling a mk1 or 2 2-door escort / hatchiroku corolla that is....

Trouble is using my common sence i know its worth £250-£300. Theorion-register.com bunch have said the same, some saying possibly more in good nik, however if I'm to believe e-bay its worth £50 and want more for it than that! how'd ya do it? what'd you start it at, set a reserve at etc as i say I'm no good at this ebay and phycology thing. currently got: 1989 Ford Orion LX 1400cc 12 Months MOT, 6 months Tax Ivory/Cream in colour Manual, Petrol 67,000 miles Recent service Cheap insurance, good MPG Here for sale is my 1989 Ford Orion LX 1400cc which i have owned and used for the last 2 years. I aquired it off of two elderly ladies living near by who had owned the car since new and taken great care of it however were having to give up driving due to old age. The Orions been my daily driver for the most part and has been 100% reliable and never let me down, having been taken on various long trips from Cheshire to Sunderland and Dorset on many occasions. I am currently still using it as my daily driver. The cars in good condition, with a near mint interior and good bodywork with very few stone chips or other marks and has been stored in a garage most of its life. The only bad thing to note on the bodywork is the rear arches which like many Escorts/Orions of the period were a weak point. Paint is just starting to bubble, however are not yet so bad that they require replacing, as said the car passed its MOT 2 weeks ago. The sills are solid as i (not me personaly but under my ownership) had a small of sills replaced last spring. Other than these points the bodywork is very presentable and has been noted on several occasions by Ford enthusiasts and others. The Orion runs fine and mechanicaly has never let me down. The car had nothing done for this MOT (other than a service) but year before last had its suspension bushes replaced. The car is currently stuttering on hard acceleration from low to high revs, however once high revs are reached it is fine. This is down to the carb jets needing to be cleaned, this happened to me early last spring, i had the jets cleaned (not an expencive job at all) and it was fine. However i believe this needs doing again. Like i say, the cars totaly driveable and i am still using it as my daily driver. Other points are that the car is begining to smoke slightly on start up however this soon stops once the car has warmed up. Again i have been told this is quite common of Fords of this perod. There have been no modifications made to the car of any sort (other than a CD player! - which does not come with the car, the original radio will be put back in) I have all the correct paperwork including V5 and several recent MOTs/bills.

Looks to'right to me.
If it's got 12 months ticket, it should make £250 easy.
Sort the carb out though yourself & drop that paragraph.
Start the bidding at £50, & don't bottle it.... if it's still £50 on the last day it may all go down to last min flurries.
Also, schedule the auction to end between 9.30 and 10pm, pref on a sunday night. This is the staclking ground of the casual buyer. (& run it over 10 days if poss...)

12 month tax and MOT is VERY important to one section of the population. Those without driving licenses or insurance documents. Down amongst the e-bay bargain basement this means Latvian window cleaners and Albanian flower sellers with a work permit written on toilet paper with a purple crayon. 12 months TandT means they get a "nearly" legal car for a year. If it needs taxing they are fooked as they have no insurance. So, adding some ticket will up the value of a cheap motor loads.

Hmmmm.... reading this, I may stick the Sapphire on ebay! (Especially given the number of kit car builders that seem to buy any old Sierra related tat of the 'bay).
Can you just pull out if it's looking like you won't get the price you want? Bearing in mind that my car might well break for more than it's worth as an MOT'd runner...

You can pull your auction anytime as long as it's not within the last 24 hours of the auction period. Given that most of the action happens in that last day, it's not worth pulling out. If you are really worried, set a reserve against it. But as I've already said, reserves are there to be met and no more....

before last 12 hours not 24 - ebay has a lot of winkers who bid and then don't buy insist on a deposit asap - and if the buyer turns up with a hi-ab count your garden gnomes when theyve gone

Its well worth slinging it in local paper classifieds, if its an honest straight up bread and butter car, tell em that, someone should give your asking price for a decent dole money cruiser.
ebay may be worth a shot too.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

The only car I've sold on eBay was my old Mazda 929 (aka Doomwagon). It cost me about £22 with final valuation fees and insertion fees, which, considering I only sold it for £62 was a bit steep really. I normally stick my old motors in the local rag, and I've not failed to shift one yet! Of course, this depends on where you are - cities are easier to sell cars in than in the sticks in my opinion. Good luck with the sale mate!
