Ok following on from the Ebay Cabrio Golf thread.
It's been lying for 6 years in a garage, and has not been started or turned over for that time....
Thing is, what should I do before turning the engine over in anger to get her up and running?
I was thinking...
Change Cambelt (change water pump) Drop the oil and change for fresh stuff. New Oil Filter Drain Coolant and flush the Coolant system out. Have a check at air filter (change) Change Spark Plugs
Stick some fresh fuel in the tank, and hope for the best.
Anyone got any other advice before I turn her over?
I was thinking about lifting off the rocker cover and smearing the cam lobes in grease as they are bone dry because it's been lying for soo long.
Cheers
Stevie

all sounds good to me, maybe splash some oil on the cam shaft rather than grease.
Alternatively just do nowt, bosh a tractor battery on and crank it till it fires up/busts.

If you're changing the oil you could take the rocker cover off and pour the oil over cam as you re-fill it... I'd spin it over in short bursts with no plugs in as well, before you try to start it.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

As above, I'd crank it over a little with the plugs out to get things circulating. Also, I'd pour some redex into the cylinders and oil the camshaft a little as you say, can't do any harm. I can't remember if that'll be a hydraulic tappet head but if it is be prepared for some clatter if it's not run for ages while they pressurise - mine did that when putting the Audi engine into my Mk2 Golf. Put plenty of fresh fuel in as Mk1's are notorious for rotten tank filler necks putting debris in the tank. I wouldn't bother draining it, just put plenty of nice fuel in and change the fuel filter once it's running ok. Is it injection or carb? Probably worth turning it over with a spanner rather than the starter first too to listen for nasty noises and check the timing is reasonable, like the valves won't hit the pistons or anything!

Kept on at the MR2, with a spare batt connected whist battering starter motor and it came to life. hoorah, burnt out belt on seized alternator though, and was seriously lacking vital fluids too. job done. Good luck

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts
