Looking for some info on painting a rust effect...... I know some people let the bodywork rust to a certain extent and then wax or clearcoat it, but I'm interested in seeing some pics of convincingly pained on patina, and also some info like- Are there any particular shades of brown that are tried and trusted. or is it all custom mixed? How many shades of brown do people typically use to get a decent effect? I cant find any pics of properly painted on rust from the net, so heres some of mother natures finest creations: ;D

Ian from WPS in Woking used to own a 1776cc bug with a "painted" on rust effect in places.
from memory, it was a ford metallic brown
Fake patina, in my eyes, is defeating the object though.
But I would say that, as my "wedge" (VW T3/ Type 25) is a very well "worn" example.

Excellent, cheers keefy, i'll try n find more pics of that particularly interested in the technique and shades people use...... There was pics of an old WW2 truck that was painted and looked amazing! Cant find it now though.... Strangly, when googling 'rat rod' or 'rat look', most of the results are from this fine forum! ;D ;D

I know painting on rust effect is controversial, but i kinda like it ;D

its not just any brown Ford Bronze Metallic apparently (according to an old Total VW I've got), sounds right, think it's an early 80's grandad colour. HTH, I'm off to put some 185/55s on the front of my van (7j Cookies with 185's, hmmmm) ;D

Gah - who owns the VWDRC bug with a fibreglass patinad front clip? *n On the flipside it does stop you wasting another rare and perfectly good original panel by deliberately letting it rust!!! I'm going to let you in to a little secret on how to make fibreglass go rusty. Mix iron filings into the resin and it will rust. Now take where there is a seam and fill it with a mix of iron filings and acrylic paint and hey presto, huge rusty scabs within just weeks!!!

btw, when i referred to paint on patina (if i did) - i don't think the bus had its patina actually painted on. Some of it is original and genuine, and i believe new panels were added where needed to make the bus solid, and rubbed back in places to get the effect - it was then given a coat of 2pac laquer to maintain the effect and halt any further detorioration
