HEllo all, Can you help?? I'm buying a vehicle which is currently SORN. It has a V5C and is all present and correct. I know I have to re-SORN it but do I use the new keeper suppliment or do I have to wait for the full V5C to apply?? Have a Maybach....

You just need to re sorn it when it runs out, the current sorn will still apply.

You just need to re sorn it when it runs out, the current sorn will still apply. Is the wrong answer, sorry. Buying a vehicle that has a SORN If you buy a vehicle that already has a SORN made by the previous keeper, that SORN will come to an end on the date you buy the vehicle. You must make a new SORN if you are keeping the vehicle untaxed off the public road. You cannot transfer a SORN. Read this here confirms: www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/UntaxedVehicle/DG_4022058 Complete a V890 form to tell them its sorned in your name.

It's correct about not being able to transfer a SORN. If you buy it you can SORN it online as soon as you get the V5 back, and it will back date to the 1st of the month it's done in (like buying road tax) so you shouldn't get a fine.

Well it was right when I bought my Avenger. The sorn still applied and I didn't get a reminder until it ran out 6 months later

The sorn still applied and I didn't get a reminder until it ran out 6 months later well direct from the horses mouth at DVLA you are expected to resorn a sorned vehicle when you buy it as a SORN does NOT transfer between vehicles.. I know because it cost me 80 quid to find out (robbin tossers lol)

Or, instead of worrying, just wait. I usually get one of those 'tax it now or sorn it' forms out before the V5 even arrives. Never had a problem. Sent some back recently, only about 2 or 3 months late. No problems

They're not all that reliable at sending reminders. Had a friend got fined for 2 cars that had run out of sorn and they hadn't told him

Tell em to f**k off and don't pay it, they've been taken to court about blaming the public for their mistakes and the judge found in favour of the public.
They lose mail internally, and had to admit they do and don't know how much either.
The DVLA say its up to you to check if everything has gone through ok, the law says no you don't, its up to them to get things right.

As others have said SORN is NON transferrable. However if a car has been off road prior to 1998 then SORN is not required or even accepted by DVLA. We recently provided support to someone was was about to be prosecuted for 8 YEARS non notification ( car had been off road in bits all that time ) . We pointed out that all their adverts on television tell you that you will receive a fine within one month of the tax running out / non SORNing . Obviously when that first fine was received the guy would have paid and then SORN'd it. Their failing so only one month fine applied.
