Right, decided now that with all the M-way hiking I'm doing it's time to sort myself a nice cheap GPS unit.....
Now there seems to be a lot of Tomtom kit on the 'bay but I'm unfamiliar with the models etc..
I have a budget of about 150 quid, it'll be second hand because I have no justification to buy a new one, it'd just be something nice to have.
Any recommendations? Not fussed by either integrated or PDA solutions, voice alerts would be good mind.
Ta!

I used to get to use a TomTom GPS thingummy when I did some delivery driving work a while back. It was pretty impressive - voice commands, speed camera warnings, a screen with live 3D map of the route. Can't recall what model it was though.

Heheh, I too use a trusty AA atlas everywhere I trek. Just I trek a fair bit now and I prefer to look at what's around rather than be buried in the footwell chasing the map, plus the family could use it

Hmm. 'Spose. But I've never seen the point of these GPS systems. Just seems like a waste of chops to me. If you know where you're at and you know where you need to be, write a list of major turns / junctions with reference points before you leave on a post-it and stick it to the A-pillar. Job done, costs nothing. Maybe I am better at navigating than most though. Although given my line of work I should hope so too!

True. Maybe I'll just borrow one and see how I feel. Considering I navigated to Wales and back I guess that gives me my mapreading badge After all, it's just following signs isn't it! ;D

personally I'm of the persuasion of taking a friend along if you feel you might get lost. better pray they can read a map tho also gps gets it wrong from time to time. like people trying to find my place of work, for example. they usually end up going 6 miles in the wrong direction. we now tell people proper directions and NOT to use the gps. unfortunatly some people ignore our advice, and end up lost

I'm fine at navigating with a map, never get lost, BUT, GPS's are great coz you can just switch ya brain off and enjoy the drive.

I borrowed a Tomtom to drive through Bristol from the airport out to Swindon - it was dark, wet and strange (!)but the Tomtom did the job. So much so I bought one off Ebay for £140.
Mine's a Tomtom classic and not a top of the range thing but it does the job fine.
Wouldn't say I need it for tramping up and down the M-ways but in a strange town it's invaluable.
Tomtom's are spec'd from 300 to 700 - 700 being the top model with bluetooth etc. but for occasional use the 300 would be fine.

cheapest way i can think of.
buy a phone with windows symbian software - just so happens i have an SPV C500 knocking about - £60
buy a memory card for it - 256mb - £15
buy a bluetooth GPS receiver - £40ish off the bay
dodgy copy of tomtom off a torrent site - £free (i also have this.
add them all together and you have GPS for just over a ton ;D

i use a tomtom 300 and i drive 1000 miles a week, it is the best thing i have ever bought, ever. i bought mine when they first came out and paid nearly 500 notes and it was still good value i would be lost without it, no pun intended!! my advice is if you can stretch your budget at all to get a tomtom you will never regret it

I have never owned a GPS system. I normally print out an autoroute map and carry a road atlas. This has worked for me for years without a problem even driving in europe.
Where GPS pays off is when you suddenly find you have another place to go to without expecting it. Particularly if it is in a town or city your unfamilar with.
I would definetely recommend a TomTom system, the GO is pretty good for the money but I am not sure if you can add speed cameras to it.

I have the TOMTOM go 700 and it wicked, But like PhoenixC said it only comes into its own in places you don't really know. But worth their weight in gold, Plus with the bluetooth traffic update system you can set them to auto avoid any accidents. they generally update every 30mins through a Paired Phone, this can be re-set to a shorter time, defo worth it if your doing alot of travelling
