Depends what you want If you want a good handling 2 seater RWD convertible then an MX-5 would be ideal. Nissan S14 make a good reliable choice. Alfa GTV good car for a FWD and in that kind of price range now. £4000 gives you a hell of a market to go for so just look on ebay and see what takes your fancy.

MR2 and Capri (if you rip 2 seats out) are the first thing that naturally springs to mind, then plenty money left for mods.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Biased opinion, but obviously I'm going to say 240K GT! Rear seats are so useless for a biggish car they may as well be 2-seater..... There's one on Auto Trader for £3495, way overpriced and you could upgrade it nicely with the change.
Rarely seen 280ZX 2-seater would be interesting, usually all you see are the LWB 2+2 models. Doubt you'd get a decent 240Z for that money, maybe a 260Z 2-seater but you don't really want to bother with the 2+2 version of it.
Either Z or 240K could be neatly upgraded with RB-series engine from a later R32/R33 etc Skyline.
Agreed with Rev DD, a lot of very nice stuff about for that money.

I'm going with celica supra or a 260Z, or pick something unusual and cheap and modify the hell out of it so it's dead powerful. This month's retro cars mag - Reliant kitten + cossie engine = 230bhp plus 75bhp NOS

I know it has four seats (then so does a Capri), but if you can find a Volvo 262C then you'll get one at less than that price! or if you fancy an even obscurer 2+2 then the 780 ought to do the job, it's based on a shortened 760 platform complete with 3 litre Douvrin V6 (although there were a small number of 2.3 turbos and diesels made too), but the body and interior are almost entirely unique, having been designed and built by Bertone in Italy. A bit hard to find though, and left hand drive only.

I'd never seen a 780 before, it does look very nice, how many were made roughly?
