My tacho needle has been possessed by an evil windscreen wiper. I tried to perform an exorcism, but closest i could get to a bible was a Haynes, virgin girls are VERY hard to find in south wales and i didn't really wanna get a chicken in case of bird flu. So i figured the next best think is turn to the witch-doctor that is the R-R massive for advice.
(to re-cap, instead of the needle on the tacho staying where it should be, it act like a windscreen wiper, that on)

hmm? has it worked properley in this car? or is it from another car, with more/ less cylinders? although this would only make it read incorrectly! have you installed anything near it that contains magnets? is it connected to the (-) negative side of the coil? if its an expensive aftermarket unit, get on to the supplier/maker and see if they can solve the problem or offer a replacement.

Same thing happened to me on my old type 25 van. It was intermittant and I could never get my head round it until the day I sold it. I'd wired the live into an ignition controlled feed, the only problem was it was the indicator one As soon as you turned them on the needle bounced

Try sprinkling on holy water and checking the engine Earth as Keefy says. I had the same on my mini and it later died completely, that was the engine Earth.

check everything is OK inside the dizzy too! The rev counter on my 929 went increasingly ape, turned out it was the pionts bouncing because the return spring on them was cattled! I only found out when it finally bust, rendering the car immobile.

OK, really stupid question... it's not a mechanical tacho, cable driven off the dizzy, is it...?? I'm thinking dry/kinked drive cable...
If it is an electric one, check the feed cable hasn't rubbed or melted on something and is shorting out... had it happen on my Carlton...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.
