Evening all, Firstly GREAT site, good to see some real nice "proper" motors out there.
I'm after some inspiration as well, looking for a retro ESTATE, German, Japanese, Euro anyting considered, just gota be Diesel powered as well ( soo many miles a week !! ), Something I can lop a few coils out of the suspension, fit bigger rims, haul the family around in, tow a trailer tent with, and drag race every now and again !, All for under £1000 now theres a challenge for you all.
( Oh and I know next month theres an estate feature in retro cars, but I can't wait till Aug 18th !! )
As always thanks for any advice in advance, and look forward to chatting with you all a lot more soon.
PS: One for the Admins, are there plans to break up the forum a bit, like one section for technical, suspension, electrical etc. I think that would go down well ;D

My first thought is a Peugot 504 estate. Nice retro styling and available with a diesel lump.

I second that! Goooood choice. Lower it down. Get a set of 505 GTi Alloys and big TRX tyres - yum. You won't win any drag races with the diesel lump in, but if you have deeeeeep pockets you can swap it for the 3 litre V6 from a 505 or 604, be prepared for sub 15 mpg though. Also 505 Gti estate - less retro style but more go! More around also. Also Citroen XM estate (£500 on ebay from time to time, big V6 motor, active ride and more space than NASA. Fit a set of big after market wheels and it looks a million dollars withits rocketship nose. Works well as a hen house when not actually going (often) MG Montego estate (pref VAnden Plas with all the trimmings fitted with MG Maestro Turbo running geAR - YIKES!

This space available to rent. Reach literally dozens of people. Cheap rates!

Also, whats classed as 'retro' these days, ie how young can a the motor be, I was under the impression that it had to be over say 15yrs or similar ?

A big filthy early eighties 300TD Merc! I had one for a while, and it survived a prang from a Volvo.......
Worth looking out for a Opel Rekord estate of the same age, if you can find one too and If you don't mind a big hatchback, perhaps a Audi 100 or Renault 30 might fit the bill, but god only knows where you'd find one.
Personally I think the big 504 is your best bet. One in that beauitful aqua blue that you used to see all french cars in!

It's something to do with Type3Detectives I think, it was on/near their stand all weekend and had a for sale sign in the window!

Hi kpMrJ, Go for the estate, anything. My wife isn't too keen on driving my volvo 240 estate over her sporting escort, but has to concede it can carry sh*t loads of stuff. I love going to B&Q to but things soooo big that I get envious looks from other car owners when I casually sling 3m lengths of timber in it, and shut the tailgate! Cut springs, late model alloys (Ebay) and a bit of de-trimming. Loads of good ones with leather interiors and loaded with gadgets for a grand or less.

I know you said diesel, and an Imp estate seems to small, but a Hillman Husky (that's what the Imp estate was called) turns in 40 mpg easy, you can put all the rally Imp gear (minilites, 998cc engine, twin Webers, Montecarlo springs) on it when you're done being sensible, to get a really capable little estate, and Huskies are like Cathedrals inside, because the roof's much higher than the Imp's. Besides, paint it black and you could use it as a hearse part time to pay for it's upkeep, it looks the part

I'd go for a Merc estate - but I'm biased! 3.0 diesel is definitely the one to go for - the smaller lumps tend to be a bit... lethargic. Alternatively, how about a Mk1 Carlton estate? Bit like poor quality wobbly children's play pony curse word now but I'm sure they're out there! Also I don't know if these came with diesel engines or not.... Good luck with your search and be sure to let us know what you got!! ;D
