MOTORISTS in Welwyn Hatfield have added their names to a scheme that hopes to drive down the cost of petrol.
Pipeline Card was set up in November by former fuel tax campaigner Ben Scammell and is set to offer discounted petrol of between 5p and 10p a litre on unleaded fuel to private individuals.
Scheme organisers expect to begin issuing discount cards before the summer.
Colin Gilchrist, a computer programmer who lives and works in WGC, said he hoped the scheme would cut costs, including the fuel he will need for a 1,500 mile driving challenge in September.
Colin, 25, is set to drive a revamped old Mini from London to Italy in aid of charity.
He will raise money for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and National Association for Colitis and Crohn's through the Staples2Naples challenge.
He said the route would probably include five countries, many Italian passes and hairpin bends.
"We'd like to raise £1,500 each for them - that's only £1 per mile of the rally. And only 50p per mile if you include the return journey!
"We decided to raise money for two charities because there are so many worthwhile causes out there it was very hard to just choose one."
Motorist Lisa Shafe, 33, from Knebworth signed up to Pipeline Card after she was introduced to it by a colleague.
Lisa said she drove socially to the south coast as her hobby was scuba diving.
"With petrol getting up to exorbitant prices if you can bring the prices down or get a discount on the cost of things that's good," she said.
Ben Scammell who set up the scheme said big companies had always been able to get cheaper fuel for their staff and they hoped Pipeline Card would secure a discount for individuals.
"We have already secured an agreement in principle from a major retail partner and our membership is growing very quickly," he said.
