Volvo front end swap?BenzBoy

I'm starting to do little jobs on the Volvo soon (lowering, de-trimming....oh yeah and a new MOT...), and was toying with the idea of transplanting the headlamps and grille from and earlier 244... just cos I like it better. It looks as if it will fit, but I don't know enough about these cars - they look really similar, but they could just as well be a totally different shape. ^ Volvo 244 ^ 240 / 260 Any clues?

Front wing IS different on earlier (pre 84 240 range). Don't know if that helps?

different or doesn't fit?
I reckon you might be able to swap the whole lot over, but thats a lot of panels to locate.
I have no evidence to support this, just a hunch.

Due to front wings being different indicator 'pod'/light unit will not mount correctly/easily/BE A STRAIGHT UNBOLT AND BOLT ON SWAP from earlier model.

www.volvoclub.org.uk/forum/index.phpRegister here. Loads of helpful people. It's been worthwhile for me. I improved my front end by removing the grille trim and filling the holes, plus painting the headlight buckets black, blacking out the chrome eyebrows and de-trimming. No current pics, I'll work on that!

Glad to see someone shares my view tahat the original 240 looks better from the front than the later oblong headlamped ( and anoymous euro-tat looking ) ones. The picture of the wing panels says it all - plus you can se that the indicator/sidelights are longer and thiner on the original. Gonna cost you at least £30 in Bostik alone

You're probably looking at a whole new front end, with maybe some inner arch etc work too. Unless you turn an early car up for free, it's an abject lesson in throwing money away... One which I know a lot of us are more than familiar with, so why not do the old 164 front end instead?
I can't find any pics right now, but I know it's a goer. I could even hook you with a cheap 145 Estate needing some work if that's your tickle... ;D

As always, great responses with knowledge and enthusiasm - thanks fellas! I was only musing about the idea of swapping front ends if it was dead simple - buying wings and things just isn't worth it on this project, it's a strictly beer-money project that will be getting me about until the Benz is back (going off the road again for some maintenance and hopefully that bloody V8 bolting in... we'll see...) Oddly, my Volvo is an 81 X plater but has the newer "face"... strange... Thanks again!

I suspect you're going to need all the outer panels from the A pillars forward, but structurally the cars use the same shell so it should work. Get your hands on an earlier donor car and give it a shot, they're still worth f*ck all like most old Volvos so it won't cost too much, the only thing is the pre facelift two series isn't a common car anymore, not up this way anyway, I imagine it's the same way down your way.

TBH if you find an early car with all the sheet metal in good order you'd be better off using that as a project...

TBH if you find an early car with all the sheet metal in good order you'd be better off using that as a project... Yeah my thoughts too. I think I'll have to keep things simple with this one, just slam it and de-trim it. Wouldn't mind a pair of clear indicators though... hmmm....

Right okay, is yours a 2 60 from another Country (America?). Reason is a few had 'newer style look' in late 70's till 1983. I know this because local garage owner had a '81 Amercan spec one about 10 year ago (bought from his son and daugter in-law as his daughter in-law was a 'Yank' on US Airbase in our country). As for 'wing' information this is about the ONLY Volvo Knowledge I can claim to have experiance of, due to actually helping a friend change a wing on her dads 240 Volvo car (and yes, we ended up being supplied the wrong wing panel first time around ).

I haven't been able to find clear rear estate lenses though so I've not bothered doing mine.

Front wing IS different on earlier (pre 84 240 range). Don't know if that helps? The change was actually for the 1981 cars, not 1984. Phil
