So, retro J metal, especially 70's stuff, has been rising in price over the last few years. So, is this a good or a bad thing? I can remember I was after a Series 1 Celica as my 1st car, back in the mid 90's, and you pick up a good one for under £2k. It seems now that prices are approaching that 'scene tax' kind of level. This for example - www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C142848/Nice car, and rare, but in comparison to 70's British stuff, probably 4 times the equivalent car from BL or the like. Is it only good for those astute enough to already own one? I certainly couldn't justify the price of a nice S1 Celica now!

Yeah, thanks to scene prices, and people who call them 'j-tin'.

Its only really toyotas though. You can pick up loads of tidy datsuns or hondas etc for under a grand. Its only the really really desirable models that go for good money.

People are willing to pay. It's a shame all the cool stuff is being pushed up market, but not sure if ther is an answer - they are getting rarer in good nick. The mid 90's was 15 years ago!

It's both good and bad, good in the fact that is should keep some more ordinary cars away from the crusher as they are worth more than scrap, but bad as it puts them out of reach of the poorer of us.

old school Ford stuff is the same, why does an escort cost 5 times as much as a viva or chevette? supply and demand thats all, if the market will bear the cost thats the value of the cars.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

JS- your statement ^^ applies to early 80's and newer examples. I think you would be hard pressed to find "tidy" datsuns- 410,510, 610, 710 for under a grand. Possibly a b210-120y? Same applies for the bigger models- cedrics, laurels etc.Early to mid 70 stuff in tidy spec < grand? Hondas- don't know really, but not a huge model selection in 70's available in UK. As for the car in question in this thread, lets say it is easily priced at nearly 3 times what its actually worth. It sold on ebay for £2k just less than 2 years ago ;D

you can ask £9K for an old Japanese car but it doesn't mean you get it. Lets see a sale price on that one.
But in general, yeah, prices of scene-friendly vehicles are up. They always are. Predict the next scene and make a bomb.

actually reading the original post again i don't think that many of the japanese tin is massively expensive, using my Escrote example a mint mk1 RS2000 can hit 10 grand these days, my mate turned down 8 grand cash for his about 5 years ago.
pouplar stuff from any manufacturer will be expensive, just because its popular, 3 litre mk1 capris go for a bomb, it actually suprises me how cheap some things are still really, a W114 coupe can be picked up for half the money of the more fashionable cars witha fuel injected 180bhp 6 pot and all the toys in it, also look at the prices of air cooled VW stuff.

It's a disgrace, I had to pay about £150 for my Stanza! I had to eat the leaves out of the scuttle panel just to survive that week.

haha @ hirst! Interesting reading.... I sold my twin turbo RA28 GT 2 years ago for about £5.5k - It is probably worth nearer £10k now though so perhaps I should have hung onto it I recently bought an MA61 which I think was a fair price at £1000 - I can see the mid 80s Toyotas etc going up in value in the next few years (well I would like to think so anyway!), not so sure about the late 80s/early 90s models such as gen 5 celicas and gen 2 mr2s... Aside from the Truenos from this era they are still fairly cheap IMO. I'd like to see mine go up in value haha.

It sold on ebay for £2k just less than 2 years ago ;D Dude, you only mention the rarest ones! 410, 510, 610 and 710 (all bluebirds, why?)... of course they're more expensive! cgi.ebay.co.uk/1979-DATSUN-BLUE-/320527066863cgi.ebay.co.uk/1981-DATSUN-LAUREL-SIX-GREY-/320524213721^^ two examples less than a grand. just in recent history. And a 120Y is proper 70's, RWD, j-tin lovelyness... easily found for the grand mark! Cedrics have gone for less than a grand in the last 2 years (tidy-ish ones too). A few 70's Laurels, countless Cherrys and a few Violets! Ive watched them all go for a grand or less...some have struggled to sell! If you only focus on the majorly desirable ones of course you're gonna see some high prices!

it seems all classic prices are up, maybe its just May, and some people buy in april/may and sell again in october, giving a short term blip in the market.
think i ll resurrect this thread in December or January and see the prices remain high

Yay! Keep those Toyota prices risin'! Yeah, imagine what a Corolla TE51 Liftback will be worth in a few years ;D ;D They'll never be worth a lot Here's a good example for you up for 2.2K....seems high for a run of the mill estate car.It has been restored though,so it'd end up costing you much more to diy. I'm sure that sss in the op was up for 9995 six months ago.
