I'm hugely confused by this. The benz is making an enormously loud clonk/knock noise from the rear of the car. I have checked underneath twice, and everything seems solid and nothing is hanging where it shouldnt. The exhaust is tight too. It doesnt knock all the time, it does seem to increase with speed though. although at certain speeds it stops. there is no regularity as to what speed = knocking or no knocking. my only thought which i am yet to check properly is the prop. but if its the prop surely it would always knock? can anyone shed any light??? Cheers

ive heard that noise before, twice. sounds like one of the cv joints at the ends of the driveshafts is kaput. not too difficult to change but you'll have to go inside the diff to remove a circlip. you should be able to find one in a scrappy for around £30, or get one from ecp, which'll knock you back £140. pm me if you need a full break down of how to do it.

Driveshafts. Always!
Replaced them countless times - not too bad on later Mercs - a bit of a fiddle on earlier examples as they are held into the diff on circlips, so you have to take the back of the diff off. Still, it's still only a 3 hour job at the most. Other end is just a single 13mm bolt. As said above, 2nd hand drive shafts are useally in the 30-40 squid mark. Give Mercman a call on 02380 784444.
Ah, just read you have a 123. Yup - defo circlip type - but not too much work - at least the drive shafts are at the correct end of the car...
If you get stuck, give me a shout.

Hmm.
Oddly enough mine started banging its back tits off over the past week, but it's when you go over the slightest rough patch or bump. It started with the drivers side, and the other side followed suit a few days later. So I'm assuming it's the bushes on the semi trailing arms... I can feel definite play in them when the car is bounced up and down. Obvious question: anyone know where I can get replacements (if they're available from anything besides the MB dealer) and how much? Ish? I'll worry about making a tool to do the job later... :/
