I'm looking for a cool cheap interesting runabout whilst I do my project up, with a view to stick it in my garage when the project is done and be an 'emergency car' when my project inevitably breaks. I'm looking at a TR7 that fits the bill but I'm worried about reliability I know that most of them were friday afternoon cars. We also had a Stag at work and the engine was a nightmare and I believe the TR7 engine is half the stag engine....... Anyone use one daily? How good are the mechanicals? The body is a bit rough on this one but I don't care, it has a webasto and a funky interior, could be a fun daily and second car... some pics! Or should I save the money and add it to the project funds, which would make it easier BUT when it breaks again I wont have a car or any capital to buy another! I'll also have to drive it with its diamond cut wheels through the salt and ice....

Ive been using mine as a daily since I had mine almost 2 months. Not used every day, but it runs even though it has a miss fire, a splutter and a slight oil leak. And it still is driveable, unlike my old dolly sprint which would have not started let alone all these problems. Great value though, and parts are cheap (mine was only £700) and it gets plenty of attention. The engine is a doddle imo, a reasonable amount of space and quite easy to get to most things. Electricals are 70's BL, so while not great, all my lights etc work. Any excuse -

Hoops - your Premium was the wedge-shaped bargain of the decade!
And there'd be no problem using one as a daily (particularly a late Solihull built 5-speeder like mine); in fact, they're usually more reliable when in everyday use, rather than sat idle...

Like mosts cars the more you use them the better they are, I used mine daily for 4 years until our son got too big, I moved the two seats closer to the doors and fitted a baby seat in the middle, we used to pull a 14ft caravan as well.
Sort the timing chain and the rust and you have a cheap car.

Agree with everyone else really. As long as they are looked after they are reasonably reliable, and the old "bugs" will probably have been sorted out by previous owners. Just make sure you keep coolant topped up and don`t let it overheat as the aluminium head is susceptible to warping.
I`ve had mine for 15 years now, and although not used as a daily anymore, I am confident enough in it to drive halfway up country to various shows without worrying.

Daft bargains. Engines are not even half as weak as Stag ones used to be, but regular coolant changes are a wise idea. Engines are punchy rather than powerful but no reason you couldn't use one everyday as long as you keep on top of the rust.
