But I have little room. I want a project car. Might be able to squeeze in a 126. Quite fancy some thing I can pickup with one hand to weld underneath. I reckon a nice simple air cooled rear engined one is perfect for a long term project, something to learn welding on, and would be great for a totally custom interior project.
Any tips on tuning them, don't want to go with the stripped out rally look for these. What wheels/brake upgrades are there?
I know after Fiat started making them in Poland they became pretty popular as a cheap first car to play with for the locals. What engines bolt straight in?

But I have little room. something to learn welding on You'll certainly get a lot of practice on a 126 ;D Sounds like a cool project. They were on my wanted list when I passed my driving test (don't know if I should really be admitting that....) But I got a Skoda Rapid instead. Did they ever do an Abarth version? That would rock! Not the foggiest about engine swaps, and I'm not sure how similar / dissimilar they are from the Fiat 500... Someone will be along in a minute that will be able to shed more light on the subject I'm sure...

Seen the Skinner Brothers (Taz Racing) take on the Fiat 126? Mental and cool.

A Beetle rear clip can be narrowed to fit a 126. Then you have all the Beetle tuning goodies to play with

Well, strangeley (even though I only did it about 5 years ago), I bought a rear engined Skoda to practice in, and then to drive after I passed. Had that car for about a year. Spent £80 on buying it, and then in total about £1k in tyres, welding/parts/tuning/labour(no workshop/garage). Was a great drive but too rusty for me, so I made the mistake of selling it. If I had fixed it up, I would never have gotten the turbo bug, it was the best handler, and it was easy to work on.
I do quite fancy "abarthing" one, even if there was never a genuine Abarth 126. It looks like they are popular on the mainland, the Poles love them because they are cheap and locally made. The Italians love them because they ahve always loved tuning bonkers small cars. Supposedly some early Panda engines were aircooled and can fit the early models, and some Seat engines fit the BIS models and there is even a 5 speed conversion.

Oh wow, found this spanking German Fiat specialist shopHe isn't cheap, but how about 2 piece Alloys "Abarth wheels" for the 126, complete with the Abarth scorpion. 210.00 euros each, or front and rear Disc brake kits (convert 500 or early 126 to front disc, or uprate the discs on a 126BIS) and do a rear disc conversion. but both together is over 3k euros.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Ok a basic guide The engine came in 600cc, 650cc (aircooled) and 700c (watercooled) Avoid the 700cc 'BIS' cars like the plague as they are curse word! 700cc engines are poor. Go for the 650cc and tune the curse word out of it. theres no straight swaps higher than a 650 so if you want alot of power its a major job to convert to something bigger like a VW flat4 or maybe a bike engine. Gearboxes are a weak point as 1st gears arnt very strong. Upgrades are avalible as they are the same as a Fiat 500 but not cheap. There arnt many 'bolt on' mods for them. You can get engine bits and suspension kits but they have to come from italy/poland etc. so are expensive and hard to come by. There was never a production arbarth 126 but arbath 500 bits are interchanagble. Most 500/126 engine and suspension parts are interchangable (excluding the BIS) Suspension is good at the back with trailing arms and coil springs, (easy to lower by chopping springs) they get alot of camber when lowered which is cool. At the front its very dogey theres a transverse leaf spring which also acts as the bottom wishbone! the only way to lower without buying a lowered spring is to cut down the spacers that go between the spring and body but you can only drop it ~1" buy this method. If i build one i will convert the front to use coilovers and build a bolt-on front x-member and adustible wishbones to get rid of the leaf spring! Bodys rust like... well a FIAT!

This is a growing obsession...One I can justify too - playing with a SEAT before going balls-out on the Shuv.
Gah.

Steady on Penski, your seat is a 127 is it not? Thus bigger, heavier, front engined, etc etc etc - a long way from a 126.

a private car dealer near me has a nice tidy looking 'brown' 126 sat on his drive mixing it with an Octavia, Trooper, BMW 3 series and a couple of other cars.
If i get a chance tomorrow i'll go and make enquiries about whether it's for sale.
