Can't remember if I mentioned this once before but does anybody know what happened to the following two monthly magazines: Firstly 'Practical Motorist' which I know was still about in the 90's and the same mag had been going before WW2 (as I have a couple of 1930's copies) Secondly 'Jalopy' which started about 1992 and then I never saw after Dec 1995 (When it went to larger format). When did these two stop? and why? I'm fed up of the newsagents being lined with 'Mega-buck'/'in-your face' etc Car Magazines ... ... which is one of the reasons why I like to go on this forum ...it's like some of the mags of yesterday (Hot Car / early street machine / early CCC and of course Jalopy) **OOOh I've now done over 1000 posts *

Did Practical Motorist not metamorphasise into Practical Mechanics some time in the late 1970s? A mate of mine has about every issue of this from about 1960 to 1973 or 1974 time.
Jalopy just went bust. Seems wrong to say a magazine "folded" LOL.

Practical Mechanics I think was the Motorcycle side (for I have a 67 copy) for during part of the 1950's it became 'Practical Motorist & Practical Motorcyclist'

Jalopy was ahead of it's time. Someone should ressurect it! Retro cars is OK in its way but there's deffo a niche for a magazine dedicated to crusty old cars of war!

The problem is this - magazine sales do not ggenerate enough money to publish a magazine. A sizable proportion of magazine income comes from advertising. Therefor any magazine must appeal to two groups in order to succeed. #1 - readers #2 advertisers. This is a problem that even magazines like PPC have, we keep saying "more junk yard cars" and they keep saying "our advertisers don't like that".
Who would advertise in Jallopy? Not many people, maybe swarfega LOL. Look at the ads in PPC, Retro, PC, CM, Custom Car, etc. lots of product and service ads. Totally out of the ethos of the "jallopy" idea.

Jalopy was fanatastic. It would be great if someone brought it back. Maybe as a pay website instead of a mag. There was a load of Jalopy mags on ebay at the weekend and i missed them.

I've asked about Practical Motorist on the Car Mechanics forum, as I think they have something to do with it.

Yeah would go well as a pay site as long as the content was good. People don't really subscribe to websites as a whole though. For some reason they still have this crazee idea that everything is free online (eh Hotwire)

Word is that Practical Motorist just went bust due to poor sales and insufficient advertising revenues.

I suppose there just wasn't room for Practical Mechanics when there was also Car Mechanics. Popular Motoring disappeared in the early 80's, that was a similar title aimed at the DIY market if I recall.
Mention of Jalopy inspired me to dig my collection of issues 1-30 out of the garage, all bought when new. It was hard work finding the latest issue sometimes, their distribution wasn't good. Was there a number 31? It went A4 size from 28, but the end was pretty near then.
Issue 2 contains an ad for a magazine called 'Bad Car: Mean n' Moody Motors', genuine or spoof? Its cover featured a rat-look MkIII Cortina pictured in a scrapyard. The cover of issue 11 boated that it featured a Marvellous Moskvich, Sagging Solara, Crumbling Cavalier, Mouldering Minor and Rotting Renault. Who could resist?
On a similar vein, what happened to Real Classics? It didn't seem to have much higher production values than Jalopy, though it was supposedly a more serious classic car mag.
This place is the nearest I can get to an equivalent of my favourite mag's - Jalopy, Hot Car, 80's Street Machine, 70's Custom Car, Auto Performance, Car up to 1990 or so and one or two others.

I remember real classics. I think I had a badge with one issue? That was pretty cool. Dunno if I kept those or threw then out when I moved house.

I've still got the first issue of Real Classics with pin badge and A35 on front cover. It was launched in August 1997 and their project vehicle was a Peugeot 404 'Light Lorry' (which got written of a year or so later after the restoration but believe it or not the owner found another! and it was at the last NEC show). Real Classics was a very good try from a friendly bunch of people shame it never continued.

While this thread continues, does anyone remember the short-lived (four issues I think) 'Old Car' from circa 1989? Showed how NOT to produce a magazine...

I think I saw one issue of Old Car. Did it have a white Jagaur on the cover? An XK120 or a Mk2 or something?
There was another mag about 1993 or 1994 Was it called British Classics? Glossy full format magazine. I was linging up a Vauxhall VX4/90 feature for them and they went bust after about 2 issues. They had either Firenzas or HSR Chevettes in the last issue.

I'm missing No. 9, No.10 was the last issue... I was going to subsrcibe, the letter that says they were folding and returning my cheque is still tucked in between the pages. But the editorial says how they are going to upgrade the mag...

I think I saw one issue of Old Car. Did it have a white Jagaur on the cover? An XK120 or a Mk2 or something? Whoa, they were really pushing back the frontiers there weren't they? Even Jalopy #30 had a pair of E-Types on the cover. Anyway, it does vaguely ring a bell. Got a few copies of something called Collectors Car Price Guide at home, it's awful. Nothing about enjoying cars, just their financial worth and investment value (hey, it was the 80's). Here's another obscurity to chuck in - Auto Enthusiast, from the early 70's.

I've just been looking through Real Classics No.10... Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, Chrysler 2-Litre... and Skodas ;D ...They were just ahead of their time... Oh, and there's a picture of a TR7 banger racer as well... ;D I've got some Jalopy mags (the early, small ones) somewhere... time for an expedition into the loft, methinks...
