Freebie Alert!! ;D Picked this up today, no plans as yet other than to see if it will run on SVO / WVO. Tax until the end of July MOT until December. Sadly flat out is about 65MPH so I'll try changing the filters first and go from there. After 60 ish and on hills it seems to 'stutter'. I havent had a diesel before, but if it was a petrol car it feels like it isn't getting enough fuel. Air filter was black:

Yeah, I wasn't expecting a 2 litre diesel to be a ball of fire I don't think it's been serviced in an age so I'll change the fuel filters, air filter and do an oil change. I gave it a wash and I recon a few KG of mud fell off the underside and the wheel arches, that might speed it up a bit ;D I've always fancied seeing if a diesel will really run OK on veg oil and seeing as this has cost me noting now is as good a time as any to try it.

what fuel pump has it got, i think iirc if its a lucas fuel pump you need to run a tank heater as the lucas cant cope with the thick veg oil and destroys the seals, if its got a bosche injection pump you should be ok to run without a tank heater, i have seen plenty of landys running on chip fat only downside is the smell always makes me hungry

why can't I find free Mercs?! it looks like it's in really good nick. the performance can only get better with a fresh air filter, that one looks like it's been dipped in derv! altough at least it's still the right shape, my Rover densil did this to it's filter: which, incidentally, is not what it should look like..... whilst you're fettling the merc, check that the intake pipes aren't full of cr@p, all that dirt on the filter must've come from somewhere. Air is king in diesel performance as the motor uses "full throttle" at all times, i.e. the amount of air used is constant (loads of it), it's the amount of fuel injected that controls the revs. in a spark ignition engine, both are variable.

That air filter is in a real bad way. I did clean all the intake pipes when I removed the air filter, but they weren't really that bad, I think the air filter was just aincient. Changing the air filter didn't help the running, but changing the two diesel filters really did. The inline prefilter was black. Only just made it home after picking up the new filters, it was getting slower and slower. Even tried it on a bit of veg oil, it seems to run fine on it, possibly better than diesel Next step is to clean the interior which is truly disgusting and get some new (correct size) tyres on it.

Thes will run on waste oil wothout modification according to what I have read previously on a veggy oil website, all these old mercs will, it is only the newer CDis that you can't. Probably the reason the fuel filters were blocked up is that it may have been run on SVO/WVO already, and it has a cleaning effect on the tank and the curse word gets dragged into the filters, I ran a Xantia on SVO for best part of a year, about an 80/20 ratio, I sold that to a bloke on here, and yes I wish I had kept it, as with minor fettling it would have made a spot on daily, now I have a Mondeo 130bhp Tdci, quick, but not as much character.
