Hey all. Over the past few years I have been working with a friend of mine as a mechanic for his race car. I noticed one day while working on it that he had an old Esso Spirit can in his garage. I mentioned that I thought it was cool and he said it belonged to his Grandad and he was given it when he died. Anyway a few months ago he asked me if there was anything I wanted for all my hard work and as I joke I said the Spirit can, not expecting to be given it. However he did and I promised I would give it a new lease of life. I wanted it to go with my 205 as it's a bit of a gas guzzler these days and it's hard to do a full trackday without needing a bit more juice in the tank. Also since it's an Esso can it will go well with the Peugeot as they were partners back in the good old days ;D So I started with this: I then dropped it off at the powder coaters with instructions for them to blast it and powdercoat it a nice gloss white. I took the cap, a nice brass item, and gave it a polish with some Autosol and some wire wool: I picked it up from the powdercoaters today. I think it looks fantastic and I can't wait to start on the rest: The plan is to paint the esso logo in with the blue ring and red writing and then have the text on the top of the can pinstriped in black.

That's most excellent.
I love the fact that it cost 3/-. That's 15 (new) p, or 7.5p per gallon. Does it have a date on it?

That is nice... I'm going to be pedantic tho, cos that isn't a jerry can. (it also has a shell top on an esso can)
That is a standard 2 gallon spirit can, "jerry can" refers to the 20l pressed cans with the 3 handles and spout - so called because we "borrowed" the (vastly superior) design from the germans sometime in 1940 ;D

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Thanks guys, No date on it unfourtanatly but i'm guessing it was 1930's era.
SOC, Pedantic is fine with me, i don't mind being corrected. I'm going to try and track down an Esso cap but the Shell one will do for now and i'll change the thread title accordingly ;D

Are you leaving it all white or going to try fill the 'esso' text with a splash of colour?
Pinstriping would be nice also!

i am trying to get rid of a few of mine to rasie funds for my engine build.
i like the idea of powerder coating as well!!! update us with the progress!!!

I had a look and it would seem this is a 1939 can so it's about 49 years older than me...doesn't look it though ;D Any chance you have en Esso cap you would want to trade for a Shell one? I've been doing a bit of painting one it, unfourtanatly it's taking ages as i do a bit, decided i'm not happy with it then rub it off and start again. When i have done it i'll get some pics then i'm probably going to send it to Slacker (member here) to get it pinstriped.
